According to the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), the need to develop new highways and adopt smart technologies is evident due to the increase in the number of vehicles and highway usage, which has now reached up to six million vehicles daily, reported Bernama.
“We are committed to developing the toll highway network in Malaysia because the need is clearly there, especially as many areas and cities are now facing traffic congestion. At the same time, we are also seeing a fairly high increase in traffic volume. Based on daily monitoring, more than 5.5 million to six million vehicles use our highways every day,” said LLM director-general Datuk Mohd Hadzmir Yusoff.
The Malaysian Highway Authority is also placing emphasis on the continuity of highway network development, while ensuring that every project complies with stipulated technical and safety standards from the planning stage through to operations, Mohd Hadzmir said.
Observations by LLM on the New Pantai Expressway 2 (NPE2) extension project found that more than 200,000 vehicles use the NPE daily, and that the highway’s capacity is no longer sufficient to accommodate the growing demand, according to the director-general.
“With the existing three lanes, the capacity is insufficient and the level of service is at Level E, which is quite congested. Therefore, we will add two more elevated lanes, bringing the total to five lanes,” he said.
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will be used to monitor works live, and enable immediate action to be taken should any incident occur, thus enhancing safety throughout the construction period, he added. LLM is also moving towards the development of smart highways through the use of artificial intelligence automatically detect accidents and traffic violations.

Aiyoo. Where got 3 lanes after Pantai Dalam toll booth. All squeezed into 2 lanes because of IJM short sighted when constructing NPE back in 2000. Need to add exit lane from Taman Desa into Pandai Sentralpark. Design at Pantai Dalam exit is sorely lacking of brain.

You’re too sick & too tired to realise that there were already traffic jam problems many years before he became transport minister.
“need to develop new highways” its in the name “Malaysian Highway Authority” of course the solution is more highway
nope. it’s actually accessible public transport that would ease urban congestion but y’all are so car centric ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Just one more lane bro.
“Observations by LLM on the New Pantai Expressway 2 (NPE2) extension project found that more than 200,000 vehicles use the NPE daily, and that the highway’s capacity is no longer sufficient to accommodate the growing demand,”
Huh wait, isn’t NPE2 supposed to be flying over Jalan Istana and (former) Lebuhraya Mahameru? How does adding extra 2 lanes over Jalan Istana fix NPE’s traffic depan Sunway and Jalan Templer junction?
Fuh, the way Malaysia boomed over the last two decades is truly something else.
”
2000: Only about 20% of us had mobile phones.
2025: Now? Over 120% ownership—meaning many of us got one for work, one for peribadi!
We really tapau the world now. According to the 2023 ICT Development Index , Malaysia ranked 15th globally and 3rd in ASEAN. With a penetration rate hitting up to 129%, we are officially leaving big economies like the USA far behind in connectivity. ”
But it’s not just phones. Our vehicle industry also gempak! Perodua and Proton are setting records, and we can definitely grow this further. Imagine if we ramp up our recycling, creating a shorter, smarter life cycle for gadgets and cars. Baru la rakyat hepi, enjoying the latest tech and better, sustainable mobility. Kita boleh!
just cancel all the petrol subsidies, then you will see much lesser cars on the road
The two additional lanes should be dedicated only for buses, similar to the Sunway BRT, in line with the governments goal of increasing public transport usage.
Allowing private vehicles to ply that new lane is going to result in worsening congestion due to bottlenecks at the exits as a result of induced demand. The higher fuel consumption from all those private vehicles also defeats the government’s effort to reduce fuel subsidy expenditure.
FIXED THE FXXXING TRAFFIC LIGHTS FIRST!
I’m not sure about other highways, but is the LLM aware of how broken the SALAK highway is during the morning rush hour? It’s practically a standstill every morning—I’ve spent 30 minutes in the car without even moving 200 meters. It has been like this for the past five years, yet there hasn’t been a single visible effort to improve the situation. Who else should know this?
When you have agency like LLM, of course the solution is to build more highways. They will never propose something like enhance the public transport which will eventually threaten the agency’s existence
Ok mate, STOP!!
Its 2026, They are Still referring on Urban Highways ran by Corporate dystopia just in Cities and one area only, and Highly Ignoring Interstate Highways that connects to the rest of the Peninsula and the Country which that makes travelling long distances easier, Same with Rails. As well as ignoring the Real Solution to Traffic and Flooding by more Pedestrian and Bike Paths (on top of Public Transit for more areas) as another option from cars, Green spaces such as Parks, Retention Ponds, and Uncloggable drainage system, Better Healthcare, Increasing Wages just a bit, and anything else That helps you?
SERIOUSLY! Stop with just more Repetitive Urban Highways and Bad Parking Requirements as a PROMOTION OF MORE CARS! ITS 2026!! We’re Not becoming the NEXT AMERICA of Automobiles in Another Country like this. Soend some money elsewhere than this, Smarter Detection loop Traffic Lights and People Centric urban design is the Answer.
This country and forever “one more lane, bro.”
the only solution is a more efficient public transport system not building up more highway or road!! idiots….look into the last mile problem!
