Kedah KPDN arrests 61-year-old man and seizes ice truck allegedly used for diesel smuggling purposes

The Kedah domestic trade and cost of living ministry (Kedah KPDN) arrested a 61-year-old man at a petrol station in Sungai Petani yesterday for allegedly purchasing diesel from four petrol stations for smuggling purposes.

In a statement, Kedah KPDN said the case leading to the arrest comes following two weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering. During a raid conducted at 11am, officers found a 1,000-litre intermediate bulk container (IBC) filled with liquid suspected to be diesel inside an ice truck.

“Initial investigations by the raiding team on the 61-year-old man found that the diesel in the IBC tank had been purchased from four petrol stations around the district. All items found during the raid were seized, with the total value of the confiscated goods amounting to RM38,005,” the statement said.

The case is being investigated under Section 21 of the Supply Control Act 1961 (Act 122) for possessing controlled goods (diesel) without a storage permit. Individuals convicted may face a fine of up to RM1 million, imprisonment of up to three years, or both for the first offence. A second and subsequent offence brings with it a fine not exceeding RM3 million or imprisonment not exceeding five years, or both.

Meanwhile, organisations found guilty will face a fine not exceeding RM2 million for the first offence and RM5 million for the second and subsequent offences. Kedah KPDN said it welcomes complaints or information relating to such activities from the public. Last month, a similar case occured in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, with two men arrested.
