Car Buyer's Guide

Overview

The Hyundai Santa Fe MX5 is a D-segment SUV with six or seven seats, launched in Malaysia in 2025 as the fifth-generation model. It is aimed at family buyers who want a large Hyundai with a choice of 1.6-litre turbo hybrid or 2.5-litre turbo petrol power. Prices start at RM225,000.

Santa Fe in 2026 — what's new

The MX5 Santa Fe carries into 2026 from its 2025 Malaysia launch, with the 1.6T Hybrid Prime, 1.6T Hybrid Prestige and 2.5T Calligraphy forming the range. The key 2026 development is local assembly: the Santa Fe and Tucson are due for CKD launch in Q2 2026, built at Inokom Kulim after the Staria. No facelift or powertrain change is listed.

Which variant to buy

Most buyers should start with the 1.6T Hybrid Prime at RM225,000: it gets seven seats, the 1,598 cc petrol hybrid setup, 177 hp and a conventional automatic. The 1.6T Hybrid Prestige costs RM245,000 with the same listed engine, output, gearbox and seating, so on paper the RM20,000 gap is trim, not mechanicals — check the equipment list. Pay RM270,000 for the 2.5T Calligraphy only if you want 277 hp and six seats.

Verdict

The Santa Fe’s strongest showroom points are clear: six/seven-seat flexibility, two powertrain paths and headline safety/warranty coverage of 10 airbags and eight years. But the entry price is high beside the Proton X90 from RM106,800, Jetour VT9 from RM119,350, Chery Tiggo 9 from RM166,800 and Omoda Jaecoo J8 from RM178,800. Buy it for the Hyundai package and cabin format, not because it is the cheapest large SUV.
