Car Buyer's Guide

Overview

The MG HS is a C-segment, five-seat petrol SUV aimed at buyers shopping a Proton X70, Honda CR-V or Mazda CX-5 alternative with a conventional 1.5-litre turbo powertrain. The Malaysian Mk1 facelift range starts from RM129,900 and uses a 160 hp engine paired with a seven-speed dry dual-clutch automatic.

HS in 2026 — what's new

For 2026, the priced Malaysian MG HS range remains the 2024-launched Mk1 facelift in Standard and LUX forms. A second-generation MG HS C-SUV appeared in preview form at KLIMS 2026, but there is no 2026 specification change for the Mk1 facelift range. The current car continues as a 1.5-litre turbo, seven-speed DCT C-segment SUV.

Which variant to buy

Most buyers should start with the Standard at RM129,900. It has the same mechanical package as the LUX: 1,490 cc petrol engine, 160 hp, dry dual-clutch automatic and five seats. The LUX costs RM145,900, so the RM16,000 gap is not buying more power or a different transmission on paper. Pay more only if the LUX equipment list has must-have kit for you.

Verdict

The HS is not the cheap option in this class. A Proton X70 and Jetour Dashing both start at RM106,800, while the Chery Tiggo 7 is almost identical at RM129,800 and the Kia Sportage starts at RM129,639. The MG’s case is simpler: a five-seat C-segment SUV with a 160 hp 1.5-litre turbo and seven-speed DCT. Check the LUX kit carefully before paying the premium.
