2024 Hyundai Santa Fe: style, seven-seat versatility, hybrid/diesel powertrains, 8-yr hybrid battery warranty

Having been present in Malaysia for nigh on two decades, the Hyundai Santa Fe needs no introduction as far as nameplates go. Various iterations of the large seven-seat SUV have served many families, their tag-along friends and their gear on almost everything from school runs to full-on balik kampung journeys.

Launched in Malaysia in September, the 2024 Santa Fe boasts significant upgrades over the original fourth-generation model – with the most prominent being a new platform – to once again offer versatile and stylish family transport like no other.

This new platform features a subframe that has changed from an H shape to a pound shape, and an improved rear cross member bushing, to more efficiently absorb the impact from the tyres and suspension for a smoother, comfortable ride. Prioritising your family’s safety, this Hyundai third generation platform also comes with increased composition of ultra-high tensile strength steel to improve overall collision safety.

The styling is bold, distinctive and unmistakably Hyundai – the full-width geometric-pattern grille is seamlessly merged with the headlamps, and a clamped lower intake creates a balanced, wide stance. T-shaped LED DRLs create a unique signature, and a seamless line connects them to the tail lamps. A wide rear reflector and skid plate form a striking three-layered aesthetic. Head-turning? You bet.

The spacious, practical and classy interior features liberal use of premium soft-touch materials, while the elevated centre console creates an armchair-like experience for those up front. The push-button gear selector – courtesy of shift-by-wire – is intuitive to use while freeing up centre console space, and access to all seats are a doddle thanks to one-touch walk-in and folding. With comfort levels this high, you and your family will definitely be looking forward to long-distance drives.

There are two powertrains spread over three variants: the RM195,888 Hybrid Plus, RM209,888 Diesel Max and RM215,888 Hybrid Max, all prices being on-the-road before insurance. Let’s first look at the Hybrid – it’s the first Santa Fe hybrid in Malaysia and the second locally-assembled (CKD) Hyundai hybrid after the IONIQ Hybrid in 2016.

The Hybrid marries a 180 PS/265 Nm 1.6 litre direct-injected turbo petrol engine with a six-speed auto and a 44.2 kW electric motor to send a combined 230 PS and 350 Nm of torque to the front wheels. The Smartstream hybrid engine features the world’s first Continuously Variable Valve Duration (CVVD) technology, enabling optimised performance by adjusting the valve duration based on driving conditions.

With respectable performance and the ability to travel up to 1,288 km on a 67-litre fuel tank – indeed, the first hybrid D-segment seven-seater SUV to be capable of this – you truly get the best of both worlds. Plus, there’s an eight-year, unlimited mileage hybrid battery warranty, and if the battery’s state of health dips under 70% within those eight years, Hyundai will swap defective cells free of charge. How’s that for total peace of mind?

Sitting in between the two hybrid variants is the Diesel Max, which carries the proven 2.2 litre CRDi turbodiesel engine that delivers 193 PS and 440 Nm of torque to all wheels through the HTRAC all-wheel drive system and an eight-speed wet DCT.

No matter what variant you choose, you get a five-year, 300,000 km vehicle warranty, six airbags, the Level 2 autonomous driving system – Hyundai SmartSense safety suite that includes Smart Cruise Control and Forward Collision Assist (FCA) that can detect cars, pedestrians and even cyclists, plus an eight-inch touch-screen with wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay and voice recognition, auto wipers, shift paddles, six speakers and wireless phone charging.

The Max variants have a fully digital 12.3-inch instrument panel, a head-up display, blind spot view monitor, surround view monitor and a power tailgate, while the range-topping Hybrid Max exclusively gets ventilated front seats and driver’s seat memory. Alloys are 17s for the Hybrid Plus, 19s for the Hybrid Max and 20s for the Diesel Max.

The 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe presents an altogether compelling package, made all the more so by four striking colours – Snowflake White Pearl, Jet Black, Meteor Grey and Stormy Sea. • 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe facelift launched in Malaysia – refreshed 4th-gen; 2.2 diesel, 1.6 hybrid; fr RM185,888

2024 Hyundai Santa Fe facelift launched in Malaysia – refreshed 4th-gen; 2.2 diesel, 1.6 hybrid; fr RM185,888

The Hyundai Santa Fe is now launched in Malaysia. It has been a while since we last heard of the facelifted fourth-generation SUV, which was first seen late last year and was officially previewed at PACE 2023.

Three CKD locally assembled variants are available: the 1.6L Turbo Hybrid Plus at RM185,888, the 2.2L Turbo Diesel Max at RM199,888 and the 1.6L Turbo Hybrid Max for RM205,888, all on-the-road excluding insurance. These prices are inclusive of a RM10,000 discount for the first 100 early birds (add RM10k to these figures for the standard RRP). Note that this time, the range-topping variant is not the diesel. The factory warranty is for five years or 300,000 km.

“The Santa Fe has long been a cornerstone of Hyundai’s SUV line-up, consistently meeting the needs of Malaysian families. With its bold design, advanced technology and choice of powertrains, the Santa Fe continues to impress those seeking a versatile and premium driving experience,” said Jeffrey Gan, MD of Southeast Asia at Sime Darby Motors.

“The Santa Fe is equipped with an array of cutting-edge technologies that enhance both comfort and safety. From the intuitive touchscreen infotainment system to the comprehensive Hyundai SmartSense safety suite, every aspect of the Santa Fe has been designed with the modern family in mind. We are confident that the Santa Fe will continue to be a favourite among discerning SUV buyers in Malaysia,” said Joey Lin, MD of HSDM.

The 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine packs 193 PS and 440 Nm of torque, and all that is sent to four wheels via Hyundai’s HTRAC all-wheel drive system and an eight-speed wet DCT. The hybrid is powered by a 1.6-litre Gamma II T-GDI petrol engine with 180 PS/265 Nm of torque – combined with a 44.2 kW electric motor, total system output is 230 PS/350 Nm. Power goes to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

Spec-wise, highlights mentioned in the press release include infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone automatic air con, a powered tailgate and the Hyundai SmartSense safety suite with the usual ADAS features. There’s also blind spot monitor and 360-degree surround view monitor. HSDM has now confirmed that there will be three variants, as per our preview report.

Looks wise, the original TM Santa Fe’s front end is already a bold one with three tiers of lighting. This facelift deletes the small foglamps at the lower bumper, which now has a clamped shaped air intake. The grille is now visually merged with the headlamps for a full width effect.

Diving in, the grille has a signature geometric patterned inlay that appears like cascading scales. The new Santa Fe will be very distinctive at night thanks to T-shaped LED daytime running lights that bisects the main light beams. There’s also a seamless line that connects the DRLs to the tail lights. The rear bumper design is also new, and there’s now a full width red reflector strip.

Inside, the twin-cowl dashboard is familiar, but the high centre console is new and now sits on a sloping angle. Hyundai says that the new cabin provides more space, comfort, and convenience. There are also more premium soft-touch materials, Hyundai says. On the fresh centre console, the controls are all new and the traditional shifter has been replaced by buttons.

For the first time, the Santa Fe comes with a Terrain Mode selector – a control knob for Eco, Sport, Comfort and Smart drive modes, as well as the HTRAC AWD system’s sand, snow and mud presets. The “floating” centre console’s layout frees up space for more storage in the redesigned lower dashboard. This is as heavy as facelifts come, and would be ideal you don’t fancy the super boxy style of the latest fifth-generation Santa Fe.

The Santa Fe facelift is available in four exterior colours: Phantom Black, Magnetic Grey, Stormy Sea and the Creamy White Pearl you see on the 2.2L Turbo Diesel Max above. The grey car in our preview gallery below is the range-topping 1.6L Turbo Hybrid Max.

If you want to try out this big SUV for size with the family, head to the Sime Darby Motors Automania event from today till Sunday at Carpark B of the National Stadium Bukit Jalil. All bookings placed at the event this will stand a chance to win a BMW Motorrad electric scooter worth RM38,500.

2024 Hyundai Santa Fe facelift previewed in Malaysia at PACE – 1.6L hybrid and 2.2L diesel, three variants

The facelifted fourth-generation Hyundai Santa Fe is now in town, making its Malaysian public debut at the ongoing paultan.org Premium Auto Car Expo (PACE) 2023. The locally-assembled SUV will go on sale here in diesel and petrol hybrid variant forms. No pricing has been indicated as of yet, but further details are expected to be revealed closer to the vehicle’s launch.

Three versions will be available for the local market, these being the Hybrid Plus, Hybrid Max and Diesel Max. Both Hybrid variants are powered by a 1.6 litre Gamma II T-GDI petrol engine developing 180 PS/265 Nm of torque and a 44.2 kW electric motor, offering a total system output of 230 PS and 350 Nm. Power goes to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

As for the Diesel Max, it features a 2.2 litre CRDi diesel engine, which provided 199 hp (202 PS) and 440 Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via the automaker’s HTRAC all-wheel drive system and an eight-speed wet DCT.

2024 Hyundai Santa Fe facelift previewed in Malaysia at PACE – 1.6L hybrid and 2.2L diesel, three variants

All variants feature bi-function LED projector headlamps and LED daytime running lights and LED tail lamps, although wheel sizes differ. The Hybrid Plus gets 17-inch alloy wheels and 235/65 profile tyres, while the Hybrid Max is fitted with 19-inch units and 235/55 tyres. The Diesel Max rides on 20-inch units, wrapped with 255/45 rubbers.

In terms of kit, the Hybrid Plus gets cloth upholstery, a Supervision 4.25-inch TFT LCD for the instrument cluster and powered front seats. The Hybrid Max and Diesel Max increases the luxe to leather seats, a fully-digital 12.3-inch instrument panel and adds on a power tailgate and roof rails. The Hybrid Max adds on heated/ventilated front seats and driver’s seat memory.

Standard fit across all variants is an eight-inch touch-screen with wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay and voice recognition, a six-speaker audio system, dual-zone air-conditioning with rear AC vents, auto wipers, smart key entry with push-start, remote start function, paddle shifters, an electro-chromic rear-view mirror and wireless phone charging.

All the Santa Fe facelift variants come with six airbags and usual raft of safety kit (ESC, hill-start assist, downhill brake control etc) along with the full complement of items in the Hyundai SmartSense safety suite. Available colours for the SUV here are Snowflake White Pearl, Jet Black, Meteor Grey and Stormy Sea.

  • 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe facelift spotted in Malaysia – still fourth-gen; CKD three-row SUV launching soon?

2023 Hyundai Santa Fe facelift spotted in Malaysia – still fourth-gen; CKD three-row SUV launching soon?

The Hyundai Santa facelift has rolled off the assembly line at Sime Darby’s Inokom plant, with units of the updated SUV being sighted on a trailer by paultan.org reader Justin Lee. For now, there’s no indication when the new Santa Fe will be launched, although we have known for a while that it’s coming following an announcement by Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) earlier this month.

The Santa Fe facelift we’re bound to get is still in its fourth generation, which was first launched here back in May 2019, several months before the facelift made its global debut in June 2020. There’s also the very boxy fifth-generation model that was revealed in July this year, but it looks like we won’t be getting that.

As far as changes go, the Santa Fe’s new face omits the small fog lamps in the lower apron so all that remains is a two-tier lighting setup. You won’t miss the new look because the LED daytime running lights now form a distinctive T-shaped signature between the upper and lower light clusters.

There’s also a wider grille between the main headlamps (the lower light cluster) that bears a more eye-catching pattern on the insert. Rounding off the changes at the front is a new bumper with contrasting trim that frames the lower intake.

At the rear, the redesigned LED taillights are linked by a slim illuminated bar to go along with the new bumper that does away with the rugged trim piece. The new body sees minimal change to the dimensions, as the facelifted Santa Fe measures 4,785 mm long (+15 mm), 1,900 mm wide (+10 mm) and 1,685 mm tall (+5 mm), while the wheelbase stays at 2,765 mm.

Inside, the dual-cockpit dashboard looks largely the same, although the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system is new and is without a thick bezel to accommodate buttons and dials. These have been moved to the new centre console, which is raised and angled, while also playing host to the climate controls and switches for the shift-by-wire transmission.

As part of the facelift, the Santa Fe gets a Terrain Mode selector for the first time, which is a control knob for Eco, Sport, Comfort and Smart drive modes, as well as the HTRAC all-wheel-drive system’s sand, snow and mud presets (if specified).

The pre-facelift Santa Fe was previously offered in Malaysia with either a 2.4 litre naturally-aspirated inline-four petrol or 2.2 litre turbodiesel four-cylinder engine. The petrol unit came with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the diesels got an eight-speed automatic – front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive were dependent on the chosen variant.

  • 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe facelift revealed – SUV sports bold front end, redesigned cabin, new platform

2021 Hyundai Santa Fe facelift revealed – SUV sports bold front end, redesigned cabin, new platform

Hyundai has released the first official images and details of the upcoming new 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe. This is by right a facelift of the current fourth-generation TM – which first surfaced not too long ago in February 2018 – but it’s as heavy as facelifts come, as there’s a new platform underneath.

Billed as “the ultimate family adventure vehicle”, the latest Santa Fe was developed to offer a premium experience while meeting the complete needs of an entire family, Hyundai says.

“We modernised the New Santa Fe with premium features and appealing aesthetics that are sure to add value. The bold lines that extend from one side to the other and from front to back give Santa Fe a rugged yet refined look that SUV customers want. Besides, we’ve added numerous features and functions to create a truly family-focused SUV that is a pleasure to drive,” said SangYup Lee, senior VP and head of Hyundai’s Global Design Center.

2021 Hyundai Santa Fe facelift revealed – SUV sports bold front end, redesigned cabin, new platform

The original TM Santa Fe’s front end is already a bold one with three tiers of lighting. This facelift deletes the small foglamps at the lower bumper, which now has a clamped shaped air intake. The grille is now visually merged with the headlamps for a full width effect.

Diving in, the grille has a signature geometric patterned inlay that appears like cascading scales. There’s also another version of the grille in a chain link style that’s rather similar to today’s version. The new Santa Fe will be very distinctive at night thanks to T-shaped LED daytime running lights that bisects the main light beams.

Hyundai also points to the seamless line that connects the DRLs to the tail lights, giving the car a “sensuously sporty look”. The increased width on the wheel arches accentuate the SUV’s rugged look, and the largest wheels are now 20-inch items. The latter, coupled with body coloured lower body panels seen here (as opposed to black) are part of the new Luxury Package.

At the rear, the redesigned LED tail lights are now connected by a slim illuminated bar, which replaces a chrome bar. The bumper design is also new, and there’s now a full width red reflector strip.

Inside, the twin-cowl dashboard is familiar, but the high centre console is new and now sits on a sloping angle. Hyundai says that the new cabin provides more space, comfort, and convenience and “takes the car to a new level of luxury with every component finished in premium soft-touch materials”.

On the fresh centre console, the controls are all new and the traditional shifter has been replaced by buttons. The shift-by-wire system allowed the designers to have buttons instead of a knob. For the first time, the Santa Fe comes with a Terrain Mode selector – a control knob for Eco, Sport, Comfort and Smart drive modes, as well as the HTRAC all-wheel-drive system’s sand, snow and mud presets.

2021 Hyundai Santa Fe facelift revealed – SUV sports bold front end, redesigned cabin, new platform

The “floating” centre console’s layout freed up space for more storage in the redesigned lower dashboard. There’s also a new 10.25-inch AVN (audio, video, navigation) touchscreen display with pre-loaded maps, satellite-based voice guided navigation, rear camera display and connectivity features. The meter panel is now a 12.3-inch digital cluster.

As mentioned earlier, this is no mere facelift, as the 2021 Santa Fe is built on an “Integrated Architecture” with ‘Smartstream’ hybrid and plug-in hybrid options available for the first time. The Korean carmaker says that the new Santa Fe will be the first Hyundai model in Europe (launching there in September) and first Hyundai SUV globally based on the all-new third-generation vehicle platform.

It allows for significant improvements in performance, handling and safety, as well as facilitating electrified powertrains, it’s claimed. The underpinnings should be similar to that in the fourth-generation 2021 Kia Sorento that was revealed in March.

With a system that controls the flow of air, the new platform improves air movement through the engine bay and allows heat to dissipate. This enhances stability in the lower part of the vehicle. Vehicle stability is further enhanced by the lowered position of heavy equipment within the platform. Aerodynamics have also been improved, Hyundai says.

The fixed points for the steering arms have been positioned closer to the middle of the front wheels, allowing for more agile handling. Meanwhile, noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) performance is improved through reinforced sound-absorbing systems in vibration-sensitive parts.

Hyundai says that the new platform also brings with it improvements in collision safety. Through the use of a multi-load path structure, hot stamping, and the integration of a super high-tensile steel plate, the platform will enable the car to better absorb the crash impact while at the same time minimising deformation of the passenger space. More details to come, for sure.

Not everyone nails bold and classy at the same time, but IMHO this new Santa Fe ticks both boxes. What do you think?
