The JAC T9 pick-up truck has been launched in Malaysia, and besides the RM199,888 EV version, distributor Evolvelectric Motors has also launched a diesel-engined variant called the Grand ES. Fully-imported (CBU) from China, where it’s called the JAC Hunter, the oil-burning double-cabber is priced at RM119,888, OTR before insurance.

You get a 170 PS/410 Nm 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel, an eight-speed ZF auto and a part-time 4WD BorgWarner transfer case with an electronically-locking rear diff.

For both the EV and the diesel, length is 5,330 mm (beating Hilux, D-Max and Triton but not Ranger), width is 1,965 mm (widest in class), height is 1,920 mm (tallest in class) and wheelbase is 3,110 mm (shorter than Ranger and D-Max but longer than Hilux and Triton).

The JAC’s cargo bed is 1,520 mm long, 1,590 mm wide and 470 mm tall – that’s 1.14 cubic metres in volume, beating Mitsubishi (1.06) and Toyota (1.13) but not Isuzu (1.18) and Ford (1.34).

The T9 EV and diesel also share 27-degree approach and 23-degree departure angles, only the diesel’s ground clearance is 5 mm more than the EV’s (210 versus 205 mm). The diesel T9 weighs 2,055 kg, has a 1,000-kg payload and can tow up to 3,500 kg. Water wading depth is 800 mm and axle loads are rated at 1,300 kg front and 1,800 kg rear.

Externally, how does one tell the EV and the diesel apart? The JAC grille emblem is blue on the EV and red on the diesel, and there’s no ‘EV’ tailgate badge here. Front parking sensors, a windscreen-mounted ADAS camera, side mirror cameras and roof rails are on the diesel but not the EV, and that’s about it.

Even the two-tone 18-inch alloys are shared between the EV and the diesel (however, Chaoyang SU318a H/T tyres on the EV and Giti 4×4 HT 152 on the diesel, both 265/60), as are the pair of integrated recovery tow hooks (rated at 3.1 tonnes each) in the front bumper, sports bar, side step rails, LED headlamps and DRLs, LED combination tail lamps, front and rear fog lamps, and rear parking sensors.

The pick-up truck has double wishbones up front and multi-link leaf springs out back, as well as electric power steering, which you’ll find on the Ford Ranger and the range-topping Mitsubishi Triton Athlete.

A more-function-than-form interior contains a seven-inch digital instrument panel, a 10.4-inch touchscreen (with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto), wireless phone charging and a cooled centre armrest box. Here, the diesel gets a stubby electronic gear lever and 2H-4H-4L selector dial (in place of the EV’s rotary gear selector) and powered front seats (only the driver’s seat is powered on the EV). The diesel’s seats have a diamond-stitched pattern; the EV’s are plain.

The steering wheel is only adjustable for rake, but there’s a 360 camera, 64-colour ambient lighting, leather on the seats, steering wheel and parts of the interior, 18W USB-A ports, 60W USB-C ports and a 220V (150W) multi-type power socket.

The diesel exclusively gets Level 2 ADAS, which comprises AEB and adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot detection, driver monitoring system and intelligent high beam. There are seven airbags including a front centre airbag, and disc brakes all round. The Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP) has rated the T9 five stars.

Depending on which body colour you choose (red, black, grey, silver or white), you get either a black or brown interior. Warranties are five years with unlimited mileage on the vehicle and eight years with unlimited mileage on the engine (first owner only).

The JAC T9 EV pick-up truck has been launched in Malaysia. Fully-imported (CBU) from China, where it’s known as the JAC Hunter EV, the zero-emissions double-cabber is priced at RM199,888, OTR before insurance. It’s Malaysia’s first battery-electric pick-up truck available to private buyers – the Maxus T90 EV is used by TNB and the DFSK EC31 EV is a commercial affair.

Before we go on, if you don’t fancy an EV, distributor Evolvelectric Motors has also launched the diesel-engined JAC T9 at RM119,888, OTR without insurance.

Back to the T9 EV, which has two motors – 95 PS up front and 218 PS out back. Together with a combined 516 Nm of torque, the zero-emissions load hauler hits 100 km/h from rest in 8.4 seconds and maxes out at 140 km/h. The 88 kWh LFP battery, which yields a 340-km WLTP range, can be charged at a max 88 kW DC (15-80% in 45 minutes) or a max 11 kW AC (15-100% in 8.5 hours).

Externally, how does one tell the EV and the diesel apart? There’s the colour of the JAC grille emblem (blue for EV, red for diesel) and the very-subtle ‘EV’ tailgate badge. Also, the EV doesn’t have the diesel’s front parking sensors, windscreen-mounted ADAS camera, side mirror cameras and roof rails.

Unlike the diesel, the EV has no ADAS camera (nor front parking sensors), but it has passive cruise control, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert, seven airbags (including a front centre airbag) and disc brakes all round.

Red, black, dark grey, silver and white exterior colours are available, and the interior is black. The JAC T9 EV is covered by a five-year/unlimited mileage warranty for the vehicle and a six-year/200,000 km warranty for the battery.

Forming part of the JAC brand’s launch product line-up in Malaysia is the JAC T9 double-cab pick-up truck, which is one of two variants previewd ahead of market launch in Malaysia, the other being the battery-electric JAC T9 EV pick-up truck.

At an introductory price of under RM120,000 for the first 300 bookings made before December 31, 2024, JAC is targeting the Ford Ranger Wildtrak segment of the market with high levels of specification, including equipment and advanced driver assistance systems with the T9 that comes to the Malaysian market fully imported (CBU) from China in a sole Grand ES variant, though plans are afoot for local assembly in Malaysia.

As is pick-up convention, the JAC T9 is of a ladder-frame construction, and this double-cab measures 5,330 mm long, 1,965 mm wide and 1,920 mm tall with a wheelbase of 3,110 mm. Kerb weight of the diesel-powered T9 is 2,055 kg, with a payload of 1,000 kg, and has a towing capacity of 3,500 kg. Its cargo tray measures 1,520 mm long, 1,590 mm wide and 470 mm tall.

Approach and departure angles for the T9 are 27 degrees and 23 degrees respectively, with ground clearance of 210 mm and a water wading depth of 800 mm. For rated axle loads, these are 1,300 kg and 1,800 kg for the front and rear, respectively.

Construction of the T9 body comprises 48% of high-strength steel, and incorporates reinforced side impact beams for occupants’ impact protection. At the front of the JAC T9 are a pair of integrated recovery hooks rated at 3,100 kg each.

Propulsion for this JAC T9 is a 1,999 cc inline four-cylinder turbodiesel engine rated to produce 125 kW (170 PS) at 3,600 rpm and 410 Nm of torque from 1,500 rpm to 2,500 rpm, with drive sent through an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, to all four wheels through a part-time 4WD BorgWarner transfer case, with an electronically locking rear differential.

Suspension for the T9 is by double-wishbones at the front axle, and a multi-link leaf spring configuration at the rear. The T9 also comes to the pick-up truck segment using electric power steering, which is used by the Ford Ranger as well as the top-spec Athlete variant of the recently-launched third-generation Mitsubishi Triton in Malaysia.

The sole variant of the diesel-powered JAC T9 gets LED headlamps and DRLs, LED combination tail lamps, front and rear fog lamps, front and rear parking sensors, roof rails, a sports bar, and off-road side step rails. Rolling stock is a set of two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels shod in 265/60R18 tyres, with braking handled by disc brakes front and rear.

Inside, interior equipment for the T9 includes a seven-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while smartphones can be recharged wirelessly. The front centre console storage box is air-conditioned.

For the driver, controls include an electronic transmission selector and electric parking brake (EPB), while the steering column adjusts for height only. Added convenience for visibility comes courtesy of a 360-degree view camera suite, including the reverse camera.

Both driver and front passenger seats get four-way power adjustment and heating, with leather upholstery (offered in black or brown) covering the seats, steering wheel and selected interior sections. Hardware connectivity in the T9 cabin includes USB-A ports (18W) and USB-C ports (60W), as well as a 220-volt (150W) multi-type power socket.

For advanced driver assistance systems, the JAC T9 gets lane departure warning, lane keep assist, emergency lane keeping, blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning, door opening warning, traffic jam assistant, driver monitoring, and front and rear autonomous emergency braking.

Active safety kit on the T9 includes ABS, EBD, brake override, hill start assist, brake assist, traction control, and stability control as well as a tyre pressure monitoring system. This model also includes seven airbags including a front centre airbag, and has received a five-star Australasian NCAP (ANCAP) rating.

Offered with a selection of five exterior colours – red, black, dark grey, silver and white, as well as black or brown interior upholstery colours, the JAC T9 Grand ES is in Malaysia with a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty. Market launch for the JAC T9 double-cab pick-up truck commences January 2025.
