The Mercedes-Benz EQE is the fifth electric vehicle (EV) to be launched by Mercedes-Benz Malaysia after the EQS, EQA, EQB and EQC. First launched in December last year, the EQE was initially offered in a sole EQE350+ variant before it was joined by the high-performance AMG EQE53 in June this year.

In this gallery post, we’re focusing on the EQE350+, which retails for RM419,888 on-the-road without insurance. For the money, you’ll get a WLTP-rated range of up to 669 km thanks to an underfloor-mounted lithium-ion battery with an energy capacity of 90.56 kWh.

The battery powers a rear electric motor rated at 292 PS (288 hp or 215 kW) and 565 Nm of torque that enables the EQE350+ to get from 0-100 km/h in 6.4 seconds on the way to a top speed of 210 km/h.

In terms of charging times, it’ll take eight hours and 15 minutes to get the battery from a 10-100% state of charge (SoC) at the EV’s maximum supported AC input (Type 2) of 11 kW. There’s also DC fast charging support up to 170 kW, and with a charger capable of that power output, the same 10-100% SoC is achieved in 32 minutes. A five-metre Type 2 charging cable is included for use with a home wallbox or public charging stations.

The EQE measures 4,946 mm long, 1,906 mm wide, 1,512 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 3,120 mm. For context, the current W213 E-Class we have here is 4,935 mm long, 1,852 mm wide, 1,460 mm tall and its wheelbase spans 2,939 mm. To add to the comparison, the larger (and more expensive) EQS500 is 5,216 mm long, 1,926 mm wide, 1,512 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 3,210 mm.

For our market, the EQE350+ comes with the comfort suspension, Dynamic Select drive modes as well as Digital Light headlamps with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus. Also included in the kit list is an AMG Line exterior that adds on more aggressive bumpers and side skirts, which are complemented by 19-inch AMG five-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels.

The AMG Line styling continues on the inside, which features sports seats, AMG floor mats, a black fabric headliner, active ambient lighting, a Nappa leather sports steering wheel and galvanised shift paddles to control brake regeneration intensity.

Elsewhere, the dashboard comes with laser-cut backlit trim with the Mercedes-Benz star pattern, while the centre console gets a black fine-structure look. The two-tone black/space grey seats are upholstered in a combination of Artico man-made leater and Microcut microfibre, with those at the front equipped with a memory function.

Our EQE350+ doesn’t come with the expansive Hyperscreen, so it’s just two screens that are powered by the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), which are a 12.3-inch instrument cluster display and a 17.7-inch OLED centre touchscreen. Features of the infotainment system include a fingerprint scanner for quick login to your user profile, augmented reality for the included navigation function, Mercedes me connect services as well as support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+ launched in Malaysia – up to 669 km range WLTP from 90.56 kWh battery; RM420k

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has launched a new addition to its electric vehicle range with the Malaysian arrival of the EQE, which comes to market as the EQE350+ that is priced at RM419,888 on-the-road without insurance.

This would make the EQE the only fully electric vehicle in the premium executive segment on sale; the closest from its German compatriots would be the BMW i4, which is a smaller vehicle with a sportier slant, and which is priced from RM374k to RM431k.

Compared to the EQS fully electric flagship, the EQE measures 4,946 mm long, 1,961 mm wide and 1,512 mm tall with a wheelbase of 3,120 mm, which is 180 mm shorter in overall length and 90 mm shorter in wheelbase compared to the EQS.

In comparison to the W213 E-Class that measures 4,935 mm long, 1,852 mm wide and 1,460 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,939 mm, the EQE is 11 mm longer, 109 mm wider and 52 mm taller than the internal combustion-based model, and 181 mm longer in wheelbase.

The EQE350+ comes equipped with a single electric motor that outputs 292 hp and 565 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h run in 6.4 seconds and a top speed of 210 km/h. Battery capacity for the EQE350+ is 90.56 kWh, which gives the EV a usable range of up to 669 km on the WLTP cycle.

Charging the EQE350+ via AC at 11 kW will bring a 10-100% state of charge in eight hours 15 minutes, while DC charging at a rate of 170 kW will charge the EQE350+ from 10-80% in 32 minutes. Charging equipment will consist of a five-metre charging cable for use at both home-use wallbox and public charging station setups.

Battery management software on the EQE has been developed in-house, which enables over-the-air (OTA) updates in order to help energy management on the EQE remain up to date throughout its lifecycle, says Mercedes-Benz.

Kitted in AMG Line trim specification, the EQE350+ gets AMG Line exterior kit that includes 19-inch twin-five-spoke alloy wheels and the Digital Light headlamp setup with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, along with AMG Line interior kit. Unlike the front fascia of the flagship EQS EV that gets the array of three-pointed star ‘pins’, the EQE front fascia is a more minimalist, gloss black unit.

Here, the EQE350+ is specified with sports seats, a combination of Artico and Microcut two-two microfibre synthetic upholstery in Black and Space Grey, a multifunction sport steering wheel trimmed in Nappa leather, with galvanised shift paddles. Front seat occupants get heated front seats with four-way lumbar support.

Unlike the EQS however, there are a number of omissions from the latest EQ range offering for Malaysia. Compared to the EQS electric flagship, the EQE350+ does not get the Hyperscreen infotainment setup, rear-wheel steer or Airmatic suspension. The Hyperscreen infotainment setup has not been made available for our region, according to Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.

It does however include the display package consisting of a driver display and OLED central infotainment touchscreen display, a head-up display, pre-installation for navigation services and live traffic information, and MBUX augmented reality for navigation.

Smartphone integration comes courtesy of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while audio is by a Burmester 3D surround sound system, while the front occupants in the EQE also get a wireless charging pad for mobile devices.

In terms of safety kit, the EQE350+ gets the Drive Assistance Plus package consisting of Active Distance Assist, Active Stop-and-Go Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Steering Assist, evasive manoeuvre support, Pre-Safe impulse, and Urban Guard.

Also included is the Parking Package with 360-degree view and Active Parking Assist, Mirror package comprised of self-dimming mirrors and brand logo projection, tyre pressure monitoring system, Tirefit, window airbags, knee airbag, the Pre-Safe system and the Mercedes-Benz emergency call system.

Priced at RM419,888 on-the-road without insurance, the Mercedes-Benz EQE350+ is on sale in Malaysia with a four-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, while the main drive battery is covered by a 10-year/250,000 km warranty, whichever comes first.

  • Mercedes-AMG EQE43 4Matic and EQE53 4Matic+ debut – performance EVs with up to 687 PS, 1,000 Nm

    Mercedes-AMG EQE43 4Matic and EQE53 4Matic+ debut – performance EVs with up to 687 PS, 1,000 Nm

When Mercedes-Benz unveiled the regular EQE last September, it wasn’t much of a secret that the company would bring out at least one performance version of its electric sedan later on, like it did with the EQS. Well, that time is now, as the company has introduced not just one, but two AMG variants, so say hello to the new EQE 43 4Matic and EQE 53 4Matic+.

Both come standard with all-wheel drive thanks to an electric motor on each axle, resulting in a total system output of 476 PS (469 hp or 350 kW) and 858 Nm of torque in the EQE 43 4Matic. That’s enough to move the vehicle with a kerb weight of 2,525 kg from a rest to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 210 km/h.

If those figures are pathetic in your eyes, the EQE 53 4Matic+ kicks things up a notch with 626 PS (617 hp or 460 kW) and 950 Nm at your disposal. The 0-100 km/h time drops to 3.5 seconds and the top speed is increased to 220 km/h as a result.

However, if that’s still not enough and more power is what you want, the carmaker offers an optional AMG Dynamic Plus package that raises the outputs to 687 PS (677 hp or 505 kW) and 1,000 Nm, bringing down the century sprint time by another 0.2 seconds and raising the top speed to 240 km/h.

There is a caveat though, and that is the EQE 53 4Matic+ with the AMG Dynamic Plus package will only provide those outputs when the AMG Dynamic Select system is set to Race Start with the boost function enabled. In Race Start without the boost function and Sport+ modes, you get the 460 kW instead. Mercedes-AMG also points out that in Sport, Comfort and Slippery modes, drivers will get 90%, 85% and 50% of total output respectively, and this applies to both variants.

To ensure this level of performance is delivered reliably, AMG-specific cooling elements like a so-called water lance in the shaft of the rotor. The cooling circuit also has special ribs on the stator and the needle-shaped pin-fin structure on the inverter made of ceramics, while a transmission oil heat exchanger ensures the oil is kept at its most optimum temperature.

Regardless of variant, the performance EQE duo feature a 328-volt lithium-ion battery that consists of ten modules with a total of 360 pouch cells for a usable energy capacity of 90.6 kWh. Following the WLTP standard, the EQE 43 offers up to 533 km of range, while the EQE 53 is capable of up to 518 km.

The battery can be recharged via the car’s onboard AC charger (Type 2 connection) that can handle 11 kW or 22 kW, the latter being a cost option. There’s also DC fast charging (CCS connection) up to 170 kW, which the carmaker says can replenish 180 km of range with just 15 minutes of being plugged in.

    Mercedes-AMG EQE43 4Matic and EQE53 4Matic+ debut – performance EVs with up to 687 PS, 1,000 Nm

On the move, the AMG EQE cars have a max energy recuperation power of up to 260 kW, which can be adjusted by the driver in three stages via switches on the steering wheel – one-pedal driving and combined braking to a standstill are possible in certain modes.

Other driving-related systems include the AMG Ride Control+ air suspension with adaptive adjustable damping, which not only provide the driving dynamics, but also adjusts the ride height to maximise efficiency depending on the selected drive programme. Like other electric AMG cars, Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres are fitted as standard on the AMG light-alloy wheels.

Also part of the default kit list is rear axle steering to improve agility, with the rear wheels capable of turning 3.6 degrees at speeds of below 60 km/h. As for the brakes, six-piston callipers act on discs measuring 415 mm at the front, while single-piston callipers clamp down on 378-mm discs at the rear. With the optional AMG ceramic high-performance compound brake system, the front discs enlarged to 440 mm.

To ensure drivers have something more engaging to listen to while driving, the AMG EQE duo are equipped with the AMG Sound Experience system that generates driving sounds corresponding to specific profiles – Authentic, Balanced, Sport and Powerful. The Performance profile only comes with the AMG Dynamic Plus package if you want an “even more emotional soundscape.”

With all these enhancements over a regular EQE, the AMG variants also get some design tweaks to make them stand out. The most noticeable is the AMG-specific black panel grille with hot-stamped vertical struts in chrome, integrated Mercedes-Benz star and AMG lettering.

Elsewhere, Digital Light headlamps are standard and feature a specific AMG projection when opening and closing the vehicle. The A-wing design in the front apron is similar to a normal EQE and it’s decorated in a high-gloss black finish with chrome trim and a splitter. Progressing down the sides, we find AMG side sill panels in high-bloss black, while the rear apron gets an aerodynamically optimised diffuser as well as more prominent rear spoiler.

Inside, there are AMG seats with individual graphics and a combination of Artico man-made leather and Microcut microfibre upholstery, with red topstitching – Nappa leather is an option. No shortage of AMG badges too, with other items being an AMG Performance steering wheel, pedals and floor mats. The MBUX Hyperscreen is an option if you need all the screens inside, with plenty of connected services on hand.

  • Mercedes-Benz EQE revealed – electric E-Class equivalent is a smaller EQS with 292 PS, 660 km range

Mercedes-Benz EQE revealed – electric E-Class equivalent is a smaller EQS with 292 PS, 660 km range

Mercedes-Benz has just mounted a full electric offensive ahead of today’s Munich Motor Show, revealing not one, not two, but five zero-emissions vehicles. By far the most important of these is this, the EQE – a dedicated electric sedan that sits a rung below the EQS and is thus more affordable.

This electric equivalent of the E-Class rides on the same Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA) as its larger sibling and shares many of the same components, technologies and design details. On the outside, the EQS bears a striking resemblance to the EQS, incorporating the EQ brand’s trademark “one bow” mono-box form, cab-forward proportions and short overhangs.

The “one bow” term refers to the unbroken sweeping line that runs from the front end through the glasshouse to the rear, with the A- and C-pillars pushed far forwards and rearwards to maximise cabin roominess. That much is evident when you look at the EQE’s slightly oddball dimensions.

Despite being around the same size as a CLS (4,946 mm long, 1,961 wide and 1,512 mm tall) and having a wheelbase 90 mm shorter than the EQS’, the distance between the front and rear wheels is still a not-insignificant 3,120 mm, which is longer than a standard W223 S-Class. It’s no surprise, then, that the EQE offers an 80 mm longer interior and 27 mm more front shoulder room than the current W213 E-Class.

Mercedes-Benz EQE revealed – electric E-Class equivalent is a smaller EQS with 292 PS, 660 km range

At the front, the “Black Panel” incorporates the large closed-off grille (optionally available with an illuminated pattern featuring tiny three-pointed stars) and shapely trapezoidal headlights. Unlike the EQS, you can’t get a light strip on top of the grille to join the headlights, but the latter has daytime running lights that form a cross shape as part of the Digital Light option.

As per the new S-Class and EQS, the high-end headlights uses 1.3 million micro-mirrors to deliver over 2.6 million pixels of resolution. This allows them to project warnings, road signs and guide lines on the road ahead, as well as highlighting pedestrians and providing more precise high beam blocking. The grille hides the driving assistance sensors, while a flap on the front left fender covers the windscreen washer filler.

Moving to the side, the clean surfacing, door skin-mounted side mirrors, pop-out door handles and aerodynamically-optimised 19- and 20-inch alloy wheels combine with the front end seals and smooth underbody to improve aero efficiency – although Mercedes declined to release a drag coefficient figure. Extensive sealing along the sides (including around the frameless windows) and foam-filled body cavities also help reduce wind noise, further minimised through the optional acoustic glass front side windows.

Mercedes-Benz EQE revealed – electric E-Class equivalent is a smaller EQS with 292 PS, 660 km range

The rear end houses the full-width LED taillights with the EQS’ three-dimensional helix design, along with a prominent spoiler lip. For the first time, the aerials are hidden underneath the bodywork, helping to further clean up the design. Electric Art and AMG Line styling packages are available, the latter adding the usual aggressive front and rear bumpers.

Stepping inside (through the optional automatically-opening driver’s door), you’ll find that the EQE again takes after the EQS, with the optional full-width MBUX Hyperscreen taking centre stage. This consists of a 12.3-inch instrument display, a 17.7-inch OLED centre touchscreen and another 12.3-inch OLED passenger touchscreen, all covered by a single piece of scratch-resistant glass.

The latest Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) incorporates the climate controls and features a “zero layer” context-sensitive interface, with suggestions popping up at certain times thanks to artificial intelligence. The front passenger can also watch videos or TV or browse the Internet through their own screen; a camera detects if the driver is looking over and dims the display.

The “Hey Mercedes” voice control system has also been improved, now being able to distinguish between different occupant voices and allowing you to answer a phone call without needing the activation phrase and manipulate smart home devices. Music streaming services such as Spotify, Amazon Music and, more recently, Apple Music are also integrated into the infotainment system.

Elsewhere, you’ll find a slim air vent band that wraps around the dashboard, as well as turbine-style side vents. As standard, the interior is upholstered in Neotex, said to combine the feel of nubuck leather and neoprene, matched with either wood trim or an illuminated tristar pattern. The 64-colour ambient lighting system can also provide visual feedback for autonomous emergency braking and blind spot monitoring.

Speaking of which, these features come as standard as part of the Driving Assistance Package, with the optional Driving Assistance Package Plus adding the usual Distronic adaptive cruise control, lane centring assist and lane change assist, among others. Smartphone-enabled remote parking assist and memory parking assist (which remembers how to get in and out of a garage, for example) can also be specified, as can the pre-installation for Intelligent Parking Pilot, a Level 4 autonomous parking system.

Mercedes-Benz EQE revealed – electric E-Class equivalent is a smaller EQS with 292 PS, 660 km range

Just two variants will be made available from launch, with Stuttgart only detailing one of those models – an EQE 350 with a single rear motor producing 215 kW (292 PS) and 530 Nm of torque. Further variants are planned, including 4Matic dual-motor all-wheel drive models and a performance version with around 500 kW (680 PS). A 90 kWh lithium-ion battery provides a WLTP-rated range of between 545 and 660 km, with the Navigate with Electric Intelligence function taking into account charging stations to provide the fastest route.

The EQE can accept up to 22 kW of AC charging, enabling the battery to be juiced up in 4.25 hours (8.25 hours with an 11 kW charger). Alternatively, you can plug the car in with up to 170 kW of DC fast charging power, topping up the battery in 32 minutes and providing up to 250 km of extra range in just 15 minutes. The battery itself is made up of less than 10% cobalt, making it more sustainable.

Suspension consists of a four-link front axle and a multilink setup at the rear, with Airmatic air suspension and rear-wheel steering (up to ten degrees) available as an option. Global sales of the EQE will commence starting from the middle of next year.
