Here’s a refreshing update, one that’s not about exterior enhancements but “enhanced driving dynamics and even better race track performance”. In short, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT comes with more power, an optimised gearbox and redeveloped suspension, among other things.

Maximum output of the AMG 6.3 litre V8 has been upped by 20 horses to 591 hp at 6,800 rpm, while maximum torque is 650 Nm at 4,750 rpm. The higher output was acheived by in-engine dethrottling measures in conjunction with an increase in peak pressure. The GT does 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, while 200 km/h is reached in 11.2 seconds.

The AMG Speedshift DCT seven-speed transmission has been made more direct in the manual “M” mode, shortening reaction time significantly. Merc says that the shifts are “even more emotional” as a result of more distinct gear changes.

The automatic double-declutching function when shifting down is also more pronounced in the GT. Besides being quicker, shifts are accompanied by “passionate acoustic feedback” for the driver.

There’s also a new AMG Ride Control Performance suspension that consists of twin aluminium wishbones all round and variable, electronically controlled damping.

Compared with the standard “Sports” suspension, the new “Performance” setup features stiffer spring/damper tuning and dispenses with “Comfort” mode. “Sport” mode is recommended for increased suspension travel on undulating road surfaces. “Sport plus” provides higher damping forces and features specific control algorithms which have been adjusted for smooth surfaces, like Sepang.

As standard, the GT comes with 265/35 R19 tyres up front and 295/30 R20 tyres at the rear, fitted to AMG forged light-alloys. The rims are in a 10-spoke design and painted in matte black and with a high-sheen finish.

Inside, all SLS owners can now opt for AMG designo Exclusive Style leather, available in single or two-tone finishes with a diamond design and contrasting stitching. The black and red standard interior of the GT is rich with Alcantara – the material can be found on the seat centre sections, door centre panels and steering wheel grip area.

Optional extras include AMG exterior mirrors, engine compartment cover and interior trim, all in carbon fibre. One can also tick the box for ceramic brakes, Airscarf for the roadster and a Bang & Olufsen BeoSound system.
