Following Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor’s recent proposal to allow legalised motorcycle street racing in Kuala Lumpur, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has said he will meet with the Federal Territories Minister to discuss the matter further.
In a report by The Star, the IGP said: “I believe he has his reasons to propose it. I want to meet him to discuss it first. Our youngsters still like to rempit or race late at night. I’m sure he has his reasons. So, let us meet him first.”
On Monday, Tengku Adnan said the government’s proposal to hold these legalised Mat Rempit street races involve closing certain roads in the city once a week. The night track is said to be modelled after the bi-weekly ‘Car-Free’ morning in KL.
However, he explained that Putrajaya was not promoting illegal racing but was trying to curb it by encouraging alternative methods. His reasoning here is not to encourage the Mat Rempits to race, but to control the situation.
Datuk Rozi Mamat, chairman of the Terengganu Youth, Sports and Human Resources committee said the state started the practice of closing certain roads to curb the issue of illegal motorcycle street races a few years ago.
However, he admits that the move was unrealistic, saying “major roads in Kuala Berang were closed several times for this. Which mat rempit will go all the way to Kuala Berang?” The ‘race’ venue was about 40 km away from Kuala Terengganu.
Furthermore, JKJR director-general Abd Ghafar Yusof expressed his concerns if such races were held, including traffic jams and the safety of people who would turn out to watch them. He compared legal Mat Rempit races to last year’s inaugural KL City Grand Prix event, which had its fair share of issues.
According to a survey conducted by The Star, 92% of respondents did not agree with Tengku Adnan’s proposal, and that politicians on both sides of the divide were against the idea. Similarly, the comments posted in our earlier report echoes the same notion. In any case, what are your views on the matter?
Looking to sell your car? Sell it with Carro.
our youngster still like to take drugs, rape etc.
let’s legalise it.
That’s a direct hit! Guess they are unable to handle the menace, so just let them have their way. If the rempits die when they go racing, I’m sure many would be happy but I feel for their loved ones. Let’s not forget, many of the rempits do not have license or ride stolen bikes. Why don’t we give them free bikes and racing license too? Dumbass
Our youngsters still like to take drugs, so legalize them??
Even in motogp, pro riders has lost their lives on d circuit….
Imagine underfunded, unequipped mat rempits, stop tarnishing the image of d city,
First u change d road names n faced furor of the public, then u introduced kl gp street race, it was unexciting as the cars were slow, and preparation was a big nuisance to city dwellers, n now this thing?
take it elsewhere, putrajaya perhaps,
Seriously somebody needs to sack jabba d hut
Let’s turn KL to Ghost town…
govt should teach how to rempit properly..
‘I believe he has his reasons to propose it’
When stupiak meet another stupiak.
Obviously by encouraging them will not solve the issue.
Perhaps campaign like not to kahwin 4 and not to suka suka give birth 4 or 5 child without taking good care of them is better way laaaa….
Too late. Already gave birth in mass production!! I recommend follow Thai gomen current law is catch mat rempit but jail their parents for 5 years for conviction. Love the Military juntas’ style!
Then pls legalised GUN!! Cause I want protect myself and my family due milion bagala and mat rempit protect by brainless goverment.
“To control the rempits” should stop them all at all cost !!!, IF “to control drugs” should stop it at once NOT let them have free run like rempits !!! Wasted tax payers money ministry !
I do not agree with this.
But if they insist want to do this, regulate the participants. Rider with bad track record are out. So to at least educate the riders only shows their talents on tracks but not public road to harm themself and other road users.
WTF???
So if they are out, they go back to the illegal rempit or what??
You might as well suggest that don’t patch up all the pot holes on the road so that they can’t rempit.
Sorhai….
police can open a public rifle shooting session. when mat rempit race, the public can shoot them down like a crow.
mat rempit haramjadah that why our road so many hump…
Not legalised it stupid. Whoever catch rempit just sell their motorcycle and those money use for donation. See how much they can pay to rempit.
Close road in Putrajaya. Let them run in the middle of night.
Cannot, Later our Kakak cannot sleep.
In other countries where each government department holds complete jurisdiction over its scope of works, the police would have told the minister to go back to school and shut his stupid mouth for spilling nonsense ideas.
How to decrease crime rate?legalise it
Rempit in putrajaya please. Support.
Good, do it at Putrajaya every night if you wish
Who are ministers and police actually serving?? The rakyat or the damn rempits??
So desperate to earn votes now isit ?
Are u gonna be there to clean up the mess when one of them smashes to the ground??
Otak kat mana??
Put their Rempit skills into good use. Organize teams to ‘rempit’ into the difficult to access interior rural areas to carry out community projects. Our Roads are not meant for them to rempit!
I think govt has to make a place or mini track for these teenagers showing their talent and skills. Make it as cubprix. But without high cost. Means the bike maintain individually without sponsored by company. Then put some categories such as drags, stunt and others. Local people or even tourist can come with little payment (let say rm5 to rm10)to view the show. In US we can see many platforms for motorsport talent to show their skills and talent in proper or legal way. Hope those mat rempit can stop racing at highway or city road.
