Following Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor’s recent proposal to allow legalised motorcycle street racing in Kuala Lumpur, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has said he will meet with the Federal Territories Minister to discuss the matter further.

In a report by The Star, the IGP said: “I believe he has his reasons to propose it. I want to meet him to discuss it first. Our youngsters still like to rempit or race late at night. I’m sure he has his reasons. So, let us meet him first.”

On Monday, Tengku Adnan said the government’s proposal to hold these legalised Mat Rempit street races involve closing certain roads in the city once a week. The night track is said to be modelled after the bi-weekly ‘Car-Free’ morning in KL.

However, he explained that Putrajaya was not promoting illegal racing but was trying to curb it by encouraging alternative methods. His reasoning here is not to encourage the Mat Rempits to race, but to control the situation.

Datuk Rozi Mamat, chairman of the Terengganu Youth, Sports and Human Resources committee said the state started the practice of closing certain roads to curb the issue of illegal motorcycle street races a few years ago.

However, he admits that the move was unrealistic, saying “major roads in Kuala Berang were closed several times for this. Which mat rempit will go all the way to Kuala Berang?” The ‘race’ venue was about 40 km away from Kuala Terengganu.

Furthermore, JKJR director-general Abd Ghafar Yusof expressed his concerns if such races were held, including traffic jams and the safety of people who would turn out to watch them. He compared legal Mat Rempit races to last year’s inaugural KL City Grand Prix event, which had its fair share of issues.

According to a survey conducted by The Star, 92% of respondents did not agree with Tengku Adnan’s proposal, and that politicians on both sides of the divide were against the idea. Similarly, the comments posted in our earlier report echoes the same notion. In any case, what are your views on the matter?
