Alfa Romeo to debut “something new” at Geneva show

Since introducing the Giulia and Stelvio SUV, Alfa Romeo has been a little quiet on the new product side of things. Well, that silence is about to be broken at the Geneva Motor Show happening next month, because the Italian automaker is tipped to unveil a new model.

Company spokesman Berj Alexanian told Roadshow: “Alfa Romeo will be at the Geneva Motor Show in full force with our award-winning line-up and something new up our sleeves as well. We’re excited to show everyone a taste of what’s next in the world of Italian performance and luxury. Stay tuned on March 5 to see a glimpse into the next chapter of Alfa Romeo’s legendary story.”

As far as things go, there’s no telling what exactly the automaker will be unveiling. However, reports suggest the possibility of a smaller crossover that’s positioned below the Stelvio. Alfa Romeo also has plans to introduce a larger SUV to take on the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE, but that’s probably not going to be the Geneva debutant.

If it decides not to debut the small crossover, then the GTV Coupe – a returning nameplate – is another likelihood. Alfa Romeo claims that the GTV, a performance car, will boast a 50:50 weight distribution as well as seating for up to four passengers. It’s to be powered by a 2.9 litre twin-turbo V6 (same engine powering the Giulia Quadrifoglio) that’s mated to an e-booster (electric turbocharging) for a grand total of 600 hp. An all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring is also touted.

Either way, the new model could possibly be underpinned by the firm’s ‘Giorgio’ platform that’s shared between the Giulia and Stelvio. All upcoming Alfa Romeo models will be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, up to Level 3 autonomous driving and connected systems. We can’t wait, but will it be sexier than a Hyundai? Only time will tell.
