Proton Savvy Automatic to get Renault Quickshift5

As you all know, the Proton Savvy models offered currently does not have an automatic transmission model. But what Proton is planning to offer to people who prefer the convenience of automatic in a Proton Savvy is not something usual. Normal automatic gearboxes are not liked very much by performance freaks because of it’s big power loss due to the torque converter, and lack of response to the throttle position and shift level changes.

The automatic variant of the Proton Savvy will be using something new which Proton likes to call a Automated-Manual Transmission, or Proton AMT for short. This gearbox is basically the Renault Quickshift5 gearbox, which is available in the Renault Clio. After all, the Proton Savvy was loosely based on the Clio.

Left: Gear position indicator on the Savvy meter panel. In the manual version that space is blank. Right: The Clio’s Quickshift gear lever.

The Renault Quickshift5 is a clutchless manual transmission gearbox. Yes, it works like a manual transmission with clutches and gears, not like an oil-driven automatic with a torque converter. No power loss there. It also has the speedy response of a manual transmission. All of that without the inconvenience of having to press a clutch, especially in traffic jams.

The Quickshift5, or Automated-Manual Transmission (AMT) as Proton likes to call it has 5 gears as you would expect from the name. There are 2 modes to it, a manual selection mode where you can switch through the gears sequentially by flicking the gear lever frontwards or backwards. The gearbox was derived from Renault’s normal 5 speed manual gearbox, but an electronic control module was added to it to operate the clutch electronically. The other mode is an automatic mode which shifts gears on it’s own and requires no intervention from the driver.

Because the clutch control is computerized with precised timing, shifts are much quicker than any average driver can ever attempt with a normal manual gearbox and foot-operated clutch. The result is a driving experience that’s zippy and fun. The computer features some form of fuzzy logic which allows the auto mode to adapt to your driving patterns.

Since the Quickshift5 is derived from a normal manual gearbox, it is lighter than an automatic gearbox thus improving fuel economy and performance.

Note: I am basing this blog post on Renault’s Quickshift5 gearbox, which has already been outdated by it’s Quickshift 6 speed gearbox. It is not known whether Proton’s variant of Quickshift5 will have all of the features I’ve mentioned. The Proton Savvy with Quickshift5 is still under testing with Malaysian road conditions.

UPDATE: The Savvy AMT has been launched. Details here.

I went to check out Savvy and Myvi. Me no fan of Perodua (especially the Kancil), but sadly and frankly speaking, Myvi does offer much more features, better quality and finer finishing with similar price.

I really don’t know why everyone is comparing the Myvi to the Savvy.

Myvi = mini MPV. eg: Picanto.
Savvy = small hot hatch. eg: Kelisa.

its so nice to hear that it is reli a manual gearbox with no clutch onli..still it means it has the better performance, quicker shift timing(this is so good) than any other clutch-on pedal car, doest lose power..waaa..alot of nice thing about this engine system la..but still wat turns me down is becoz it is place in Savvy

This question was posted on the yahoo.com.my

“Should the government protect Proton from foreign competition?”

more than 65% respondence agree to “No protection please. Proton needs to compete globally or sink ”

Having to raise my children, I know we to let them learn by themselves.

Our son Proton is now 30 years old, still studying in the University, and when there was a big bully push him around, father have to make a trip to the school to inform the teacher , and look for the bully.

Poor old father is now 65+ and one will imagine how long will father still need to do this.

Our son Proton graduated and started working is a big firm, at now age 40, married and have child of his own, his manager scolded our son proton and make him do the report again, poor old father, now at age 75+, DO YOU THINK HE NEED TO GO TO THE OFFICE TO SCOLD THE MANAGER.

Simple…because it’s become a competition between Proton and Perodua where they just launched a new car each in the space of…2 weeks?

It may not be the same, but to many, both are small cars and worth comparing simply because the engine displacement is almost the same.

So it’s natural for us to compare. =P

  12. Aj said,

    June 11, 2005 @ 5:59 pm

Engine displacement between 2 cars are almost the same but myvi has more features like twin cam and dvvti, abs and air bag,but how abt savvy?it has none of the above,so savvy is lousy.

Grow up proton.Everyday I am dreaming of one day everyone of us can buy a local car with a good powerful engine-campro with camshaft profiling(not the current campro engine in gen2 without campro, abs, esp, traction control bla bla with a reasonable price.

Our local car is expensive compared to Japan,Korea,Europe and the other countries. When will everyone of us can buy a good high quality buatan Malaysia car cheaply?

Bah,forget abt it.The day will never come unless Proton can really grow up.Maybe 1 or 2 century later.

Malaysian government should learn like so country, where cars above a number of years are scrap.

There is basically 2 way to make money for proton
    1) sell the car expensive, make HUGE profit on each car sold, but sale is low.
    2) sell the cars cheap, make small profit, but sell more cars.

Example, sell 1 proton car to make RM10,000 each, so manage to sell 1 car only, or sell the car with RM2,000 profit, but manage to sell 5 cars.

by the way proton are selling the cars, they opp for option 1, sell cars EXPENSIVE.

If proton can sell car cheap, the government could consider scrap car above 20 years, gradually decrease to 15 years.

Look at the old old cars on the road, are they road worth ??

perodua got a very good management system. they knew that quality is more important than design a new car.

they are doing step by step, they copy other cars and provide a good quality materials. when they think that they can design their own car, people still faithfull with their workmanship.

unlike proton, he still not mature but wan to act like adult, what a stupid brain!!! eventhought they are design a new car but ppl still not believe their quality.

so, perodua, i really feel proud of you. i hope i can see your own design car soon. keep improve.

Betul cakap kawan kita iaitu Burhanuddin nih.
The 2 companies should have more diversity when it comes to generating new ideas. There will be a clash of interests but hey, its good for growth & development.
I said this cos I have seen bosses having HOURS of argument in the boardroom but in the end, they concur with the final solution.(Typical of multi-national companies) GADUH DULU SEBELUM KERJA is better than KERJA DULU KEMUDIAN GADUH. In other words, do lots of brainstorming before going for a solution rather than having lots of problem later on.
But kudos for Perodua for coming up with a very reliable car a.k.a. Myvi.

To be fair, this AMT/sequential thingy is a technology long time waiting. It will be great to drive manually on a road like the Cameron Highlands/Genting and to be on the auto mode during the traffic jams in KL.

Hope the servicing will not be a murder though.

Expect to see this in the SRM as well. Just imagine the SRM GTI with this AMT tech and potential 150 BHP on tap?!! Then I’ll be in the line for booking.

Saw the Savvy AMT at a road show by EON….. pretty cool. Test drive the SAVVY manual, soak all the bumps and uneven road, quiet… has that European Feel. If u dont have much money to buy a peugeot, citreon or any european cars… than this is the car but if dont have enough money to buy thailand’s vios or honda city, than buy MYVI. I would buy savvy AMT for my wife and WIRA manual (tight budget) for me cos WIRA has bigger booth, 1.5 engine and cheaper.

  42. Nerd said,

    ello guyzzz…
I just booked Proton Savvy AMT… That was before I see what that AMT look like. At first, I feel very disappointed when I saw it (The gear knob. From this site of cause). But if it come with pedals mounted on the steering wheel like paul said… well that gonna put a smile on my face (Fancy some F1 car anyone?..hehehe). You all might ask why Savvy? Well, why not. It’s got looks, speed, handling and the financing scheme really hard to ignore by those who got tight budget like me.
I’m not really an automatic transmission fan. If I can choose I would go for manual. Sadly under some unavoided factor I have no choice but to book the Savvy AMT. To console myself form the mistake I have done I have look around for this AMT and what it all about. So here is my finding. (Which is you all already know about it)
From Renault site the gear knob for Quickshift5 only got four characters on it. Which is - & + on the left side, R & N on the right side. We changes gears by flicking the knob. Just like we use our feet to changes gears when we ride automatic transmission under bone motorbike. But like paul said in these website (also mention by Renault) there’s a full automatic mode. Just like we put our gear on D when we use others automatic transmission cars. (But sadly there no picture of it)
I like to hear from those who already seen and test drive savvy AMT. We already know the handling or the engine performance side. Sad for MyVi…or Kelisa. If it got what Savvy have I will go for those two cars. MyVi only offer bigger interior (and extra 0.1 @ 0.2 cc) and maybe those airbag, that all…Don’t get me wrong. I’m using Kancil 660 right now. Apart being small, it has served me very well. Already take it to KL twice, Lumut once, Mersing, Desaru…errr lost count there. Ohh… I’m living in Gelang Patah right now, at least once a week I take my family of 3 to JB and once a month I will go back to my home town in Batu Pahat. Actually I’m very proud of it. Hmmmm…..

Maybe, this is due to lack of interest in cars, i just bought the car (Kelisa) when my old Mitsubishi Lancer A172A stuck too long in the workshop for repairing (oil pump problem then do grand valve) …

[...] The 1.6 liter Dual VVT-i and the 1.4 liter D-4D turbodiesel engine also have an option for Toyota’s MultiMode transmission, which is basically a manual transmission with a computer controlled clutch, like Honda’s i-SHIFT or Proton’s AMT. The thing is, the same 1.6 Dual VVT-i equipped with a MultiMode transmission raises 0-100km/h acceleration time from 10.4 seconds to 12.1 seconds, and the 1.4 D4-D’s time is slower (14.7 seconds versus 12.0) so I suppose the shifting speed of this transmission is not really that great, far from what Volkswagen has achieved with DSG. Honda has got some bad reviews about it’s i-SHIFT, so Toyota had better not end up with the same predicament. [...]
