First revealed at the 2015 New York International Auto Show (2015 NYIAS) in April, Scion has now released more images of its 2016 iA and iM models. Aside from the torrent of photos, Toyota’s “marque within a marque” has also revealed the official prices for two of its latest models – the 2016 Scion iA begins at $15,700 (RM59,243) while the 2016 Scion iM kicks off at $18,460 (RM69,658).

If the 2016 Scion iA looks eerily familiar to you, that’s because it’s based on the Mazda 2 – except for the fact the it just came out with a botched nip and tuck procedure judging by its gaping front grille. Elsewhere, the Mazda cues are more apparent with even the same 16-inch wheels carried over. The interior also appears to be a carbon copy of the Mazda 2 save for the Scion badges.

Under the bonnet, a 1.5 litre SkyActiv four-cylinder petrol engine is to be found. Said mill pumps out a total of 106 hp and is paired to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission with Sport mode. With the auto, fuel consumption is rated at 15.7 km/l on the combined cycle while opting for the stick shifter nets you a fuel efficiency figure of 14.8 km/l, also on the combined cycle.

In terms of safety equipment and driver conveniences, the 2016 Scion iA gets Pre-collision system, six airbags, keyless entry with push-start capabilities, reverse camera, a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with voice recognition, 60:40 split-folding rear seats and powered side mirrors.

As for the 2016 Scion iM, it differs from the Toyota Auris that it’s based on by adopting a mildly reworked front fascia and a smattering of Scion badges both outside and in. Under the bonnet, the car is powered by a 1.8 litre Valvematic mill with 137 hp – transmission options include either a six-speed manual or a “seven-speed” CVT gearbox. Fuel consumption is rated at 13.2 and 13.6 km/l on the combined cycle, respectively.

The 2016 Scion iM comes as standard with a bodykit, 17-inch wheels, a seven-inch Pioneer touchscreen system, reverse camera, dual-zone automatic air-con and Hill Start Assist. Safety kit include eight airbags in total – including one for the driver’s knee and a front passenger seat cushion airbag.

Obviously you don’t own a Mazda, don’t simply assume any car with grill is copying Mazda, ok?

As I always said, you can’t go wrong with Toyota.

But the engine is a Skyactiv 1.5L. Mazda and Toyota recently signed a deal, so this may be one of the points in the agreement.
