Here’s another big, black beast from Brabus. The Brabus Rocket 900 Coupe made its debut at the ongoing 2016 Geneva Motor Show, and the Bottrop-tuned Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG Coupe boasts some amazing figures. How does 900 hp, 1,500 Nm of torque and top speed in excess of 350 km/h sound to you?
The S 65 AMG‘s “standard” twin-turbo V12 engine already pushes out 630 PS and 1,000 Nm from 2,300 to 4,300 rpm, but nothing is ever enough for the tuners. Displacement has been increased from 6.0 to 6.3 litres by boring out the twelve cylinders and fitting them with matching forged pistons. A special billet crankshaft with longer stroke and precision-balanced rods also goes in.
The engine peripherals are upgraded with tailor-made components. The two turbos have been swapped out for Brabus units with a larger compressor unit and turbine. They are adapted to the two cylinder heads with modified exhaust manifolds. The conversion also includes larger downpipes (80 mm), free-flow metal catalysts and a Brabus exhaust with actively controlled butterfly valves.
In addition, the Brabus 900 intake module draws air directly from the radiator grille through an air duct in the hood. The new intake manifold also includes two special air filter boxes with larger intake cross-section and special filters. To lower the charge air temperatures further, the pressure pipes are wrapped in “Gold Heat Reflection” sheathing.
The result is 900 hp at a low 5,500 rpm, and peak torque of 1,500 Nm at 4,200 rpm. However, in the interest of powertrain longevity, torque is electronically limited to 1,200 Nm, Brabus says.
Drive is channeled to the rear wheels by a seven-speed auto modified to handle the increased power, and an LSD with a locking rate of 40%. Brabus “Race” aluminium paddle shifters also feature.
The big 2+2 coupe rockets from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds, before reaching 200 km/h after 9.1 seconds. The Brabus speedo has a scale ending at 400 km/h, but it’s not just for show as top speed is “in excess of 350 km/h”.
Aero bits added include a spoiler on the front bumper, a naked carbon diffuser and a subtle rear spoiler. Carbon attachments for the side air outlets in the rear bumper and carbon covers for the exterior mirrors are other exterior changes. Choose from 21- and 22-inch Brabus Monoblock rims, or Platinum Edition forged 21-inch wheels. The suspension has been lowered by 15 mm.
The German tuner has opted for a plush, luxurious feel for the cabin, which is in light brown and magnolia with beige topstitching and “fire” piping. The umbra-colored wood inlays with open-pore surface finishes are also custom-made for the Rocket. Scuff plates with backlit Brabus 900 logos change colour in sync with the Merc’s ambient lighting.
