The Automated Enforcement System (AES) has proven to be effective in reducing fatal road accidents since its implementation in 2012. Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said fatal accidents gone down substantially in 14 locations where AES was installed, The Sun reports.

“In 14 locations where the AES was installed, the number of fatal road accidents were reduced from 19 cases to 12 cases within eight months. A reduction of seven cases or 36.84%. Road Safety Research (Miros) also showed that the rate of drivers following the speed limit improved from 63% to 91% after AES was implemented,” he told the Dewan Negara yesterday.

Answering Senator Datuk Ng Chiang Chin, Abdul Aziz said the government will continue to expand the AES, which will be rebranded as the Automated Awareness Safety System (AWAS), and merge it with the Kejara demerit system.

When met at the Parliament lobby later, he told reporters that the government is confident that AWAS will improve road safety due to its 24-hour enforcement capability. He also explained that road users, including motorcyclists, will be given demerit points based on the severity of their offences. Once a user has over 20 points, his or her license will be suspended and it will be cancelled entirely if the user breaches 40 points.

Meanwhile, the fee for the service provider of AWAS, the Armed Forces Fund Board (Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera, LTAT), is still being negotiated, the Senate was told. Abdul Aziz said the negotiation took into account the acquisition by LTAT and its subsidiary of the system formerly known as AES.

“All costs related to the development and operation of the system, and its infrastructure, are borne by LTAT. Negotiation on the fee between LTAT and the Finance Ministry is in progress and to date, the ministry has not yet been told what it is,” he said.

We’ve heard much about the revived AES, Kejara and AWAS, but when will it be starting? It was originally supposed to begin in May, but the latest word is that it will all start in August, after the Hari Raya holidays.
