The Awareness Automated Safety System (AWAS) is set to be implemented by May this year. A combination of the Automated Enforcement System (AES) and the Kejara demerit points system, the system is awaiting amendments to the Road Transport Act before it becomes active.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi stated that the amendment would be tabled in Parliament next month, according a report by The Sun. “The system will be implemented immediately (after the amendment is passed) because the infrastructure is up and ready. Hopefully (implemented in May),” said Kaprawi.

Additional AES cameras will also be installed nationwide, said Kaprawi, adding to the existing 14 cameras. “We have to put more AES camera in all states especially in accident prone areas and we will engage local leaders to identify the locations,” he said.

Current summonses held by traffic offenders will not affect their demerit points once the system is implemented. Demerit points are given depending on the severity of the offences, ranging from five to 15 points. Should the accumulated points reach a certain level, the traffic offender can have his or her licence suspended or cancelled.

The purpose of AWAS is to discipline road users, which according to Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, is more effective compared to high fines.

Pak Minister, pls consider to place ur AWAS system along Bentong-Karak stretch and Genting Highland-Sempah road. Because now days, all the mat rempit with “B full” license like to do their bike testing there, not to mention some crazy car guy like to race there too. One more thing pls make sure ur AWAS can detect motorcycle too.

Usually, all these so-called govt enforcement will fizzle out in matter of weeks.
    Proof me I am wrong….

Why? Do we see enforcement on dark tinted car windows? Do we see enforcement on illegal number plate of cars? Do we see enforcement of car using illegal HID headlamps??

    Answer: A resounding NO.

Once AWAS is implement…If u see somebody drive on the right lane in NSE with speed at 110 KM/H…be patience…no need to throw pass beam to them from behind..probably they want to keep their KEJARA point as low as possible…hehehe…

The speed limit of 110km/hr is way too low, no sense at all, this kind of top speed is for the elderly or ppl with severe eye sight problems

For those who are healthy and with good car handling, it can go up to 170km/hr without problem.

  • Since the fastest that we are allowed to drive is 110 km/h, is it just better the govt limit the engine capacity so that it can just propel the vehicle to 110km/h. What ia the point that we have speedometer till 240/300 + if vehicles can go just up to 110.

The concept is good but the plan to trap motorist at highways wit speed limits of 80kmh borders on the devious…driving at such speeds at highways are actually dangerous
