2017 Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid, 982 km range

The Blue Oval is now offering the 2017 Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid, which is said to be able to “go further than any other.” The headline figure here is a range of 982 km (610 miles) on a full tank and battery charge.

Changes to the Fusion’s hybrid powertrain software and regenerative braking allows the new Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid to travel further – up from the 2016 model’s 885 km (550 miles). The all-electric range is an estimated 34 km (21 miles). Upon depletion of the battery charge, the petrol engine will kick in and the car functions like a normal hybrid.

Ford says that the Fusion Energi’s 610-mile range is nearly triple that of the upcoming Tesla Model 3, which is claimed to offer a total range of 346 km (215 miles). The brand added, “the Model 3 doesn’t run on petrol, so is also must be recharged immediately when its battery is depleted.”

“Plug-in hybrids are electric vehicles until you run down the battery, then they work exactly like a conventional hybrid. Fusion Energi – with a full battery and a full tank of gas – can go from San Diego, through Los Angeles and all the way up to San Francisco, and still have up to 110 miles (177 km) of range remaining,” said Wade Jackson, marketing manager for Ford Fusion.

The Ford Fusion Energi is one of six electrified vehicles from Ford, the others include the Fusion Hybrid, C-Max Hybrid and Energi, Focus Electric and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. Ford says that it will be add 13 new electrified vehicles to its line-up by 2020 at an investment of US$4.5 billion, and over 40% of the company’s nameplates globally will be electrified by 2020.

  • Great..now all that is left is for SDAC to bring this car into Malaysia, as CKD, get the EEV certification, and have it compete with Toyota Camry Hybrid….But wait, doubt this will happen, as especially with the ‘Geniuses’ running SDAC…..First things First Ford Malaysia, improve your After-Sales service by training up your technicians and service advisor, and improve spare stocks on popular models, but alas…will SDAC have the fortitude to do it……Only Time will tell..!!!
