Following the success of the M-Sport World Rally Team in the 2017 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), Ford has announced its return to the motorsport for the 2018 season. With factory involvement, the team will be known once again as M-Sport Ford World Rally Team.
The partnership between Ford and M-Sport has long existed, when the Blue Oval selected Malcolm Wilson Motorsport to run its factory team from 1997 till 2012. Next year, the team will compete against returning manufacturers Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team, Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT and Citroën Total Abu Dhabi WRT.
With Ford’s commitment to the WRC, Sebastian Ogier will continue to pilot the Fiesta WRC for the coming season. The French rally driver won his fifth FIA World Rally Championship drivers’ title in 2017, and would only sign on for another year if Ford provided factory support to M-Sport.
Speaking to Motorsport.com, team principal Malcom Wilson said, “it’s great to see the Ford name back alongside M-Sport in the World Rally Championship. We welcome the increased level of technical support from Ford Performance. Defending the two world titles is going to be a big job for us next year, so we’re very grateful for the support from Ford.”
