2018 Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS 18) announced – Nov 23 to Dec 2, new venue MITEC

After a five year hiatus, the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS) is back for 2018. The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) announced KLIMS 2018 today in a ceremony officiated by Datuk Seri Mustapa Bin Mohamed, minister of international trade and industry.

Today’s announcement ceremony was held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in KL, which will be the new venue for KLIMS 2018 from November 23 to December 2, replacing Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC). The theme of this year’s show, the ninth, is “Beyond Mobility”. MAA is expecting 350,000 visitors for the 10-day show.

“MAA has worked with our members and the automotive industry to navigate through some arduous times. With the rise in cost of living affecting consumers and the rise in cost of doing business impacting companies, the local automotive sector is expected to face another challenging year. Therefore, MAA and leading auto companies have indicated that having the motor show in 2018 is opportune to re-ignite consumers’ sentiments, define brand presence, and refuel the industry,” said MAA president Datuk Aishah Ahmad.

“The recent completion in the construction of Malaysia’s largest and state-of-the-art exhibition centre with the opening of the MITEC, was also an impetus for the return of KLIMS in 2018. MAA is confident that this brand new home for KLIMS will deliver a renewed experience for exhibitors and visitors alike,” she added.

Brands that have already confirmed their presence are Daihatsu, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Isuzu, Kawasaki, Kia, Lexus, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Peugeot, Perodua, Proton, Toyota, UD, V-Kool and 3M. There will be over 50,000 square meters of exhibition space. Trade-Link Exhibition Services Sdn Bhd is the new show manager.

Our KLIMS is a big disgrace. All I see is Banks trying to promote their credit cards and companies trying to sell their lubricant oil autotint.

The organisers of KLIM need to see other International Motor Shows. The main event is always car launches. Poor KLIM, now all car launches are done in Thailand because the world sees Thailand as the Detroit of Asia.

So all latest launches are done in Thailand and never in Malaysia, despite Malaysia being the Detroit of Asia in the 90s.

Pity Malaysia. All car companies ran to Thailand to make it their Asian hub ie Detroit of Asia.

I guess our KLIMS can still sell credit cards and oils.

    • Other motorshow sux. Nothing special there, all cookie cutter of same ol’ same ol’. At least last KLIMS had Shelby Stang & classic car display.

That is why other motorshow got 100x more people than KLIMS.

  • Hope they bring in more muscle cars like Shelby Stang, Hellcat, Corvette. Be different than those boring cookie cutter motorshows that just display concept cars that go nowhere.

Oh and oso gud opportunity for Geely to bring their range of models that might have potential here.

  • Probably the place where Bao Tang will have its grand launching of the glorious Bouyue SUV, complete with ‘game-changing’ features and price and renders all other cars sold currently inane and In-line with a more China friendly approach, purchasable through Taobao via Alipay.

Other attraction would be the cardboard Batmobile from 2009 KLIMS, absence of overpriced German marques and pushing & shoving trying to get inside of some cars. That said, past KLIMS auto show rarely do anything to, and I’am quoting here, ” re-ignite consumers’ sentiments, define brand presence, and refuel the industry”. Is basically a giant showroom to cross-shop cars; No preview of future tech nor ‘game changing’ introduction….aside from Bao Tang of course. Both Jakarta and Thailand are where foreign makes show off their best and yet to come, which renders our autoshow, somewhat insignificant aside from the Bouyue.

    • +1. There is no such thing as an autoshow in malaysia. Previous ones were just a giant car showroom with some random booths selling tint film and car waxes. I already forgot about the cardboard batmobile but I still remember the pathetic bumblebee.

The previous KLIM events were huge letdown and embarresment. KLIM were basically the accumulation and showcase of existing cars already available in the market. In other words, KLIM is just one big car showroom while charging visitor lots of money.

besides showing existing cars, there had been load of booth selling typical car stuffs. Nothing special really.

I guess I would be much better watching car videos via youtube than visiting KLIM.

Lets hope it will be a success for the sake of KLIMS & MITEC bcos our country reputation is at stake. No sane M’sian want our country to fail.

Since it’s in December, the organizer should visit our neighbor to learn a thing or two just for the experience since it has been a 5 year hiatus. All the best.

  • i have been to KLIMS before, the one showing the Bezza concept maybe the 1st one. Very disappointing, mostly mainstream car on the Malaysian road showed. lots of aftermarket product, and banks. Luckily there was Naza showing supercar collections. hope this time will be proper showcase, not hoping like Geneva or Frankfurt, but a proper for us.

The last one in 2013 was ok lah. Not too bad, not the best either. But i recall going to the KL motorshow (or whatever it was called then) in the early 90s and seeing so many new cars, including the then new NSX. It sure felt more exciting in the early 90s, maybe cos there was no Internet, no social media, and Malaysians in general did not buy expensive cars, unlike now. So the only time you could see special cars or supercars was at the motorshow.
