2018 World Car Awards – list of finalists revealed

The finalists for the 2018 World Car Awards competition have been announced, with the revealing of all the selected contenders in all six categories in the programme.

As it was last year, the six categories are the World Car of the Year, World Luxury Car, World Performance Car, World Green Car, World Car Design of the Year and World Urban Car. Voting by secret ballot is being cast this month by the judging panel of 82 international automotive journalists (up from the 75 last year).

The top three finalists in each category will be shortlisted at the Geneva Motor Show in March, with the winners being revealed at the New York International Auto Show at the end of March.

Last year’s awards saw the Jaguar F-Pace being crowned the 2017 World Car of the Year, and it also picked up the World Car Design of the Year gong. The World Luxury Car was the W213 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, while the Porsche 718 Boxster/Cayman was declared the World Performance Car winner. Other winners were the BMW i3 (94 Ah), which won the World Urban Car title and the Toyota Prius Prime, which swept the World Green Car award.

Plenty of worthy winners in that mix – which of the finalists do you think will emerge top in their respective categories?

Honda just lucky Ford, VW and Renault did not launch any new model. Otherwise, the Golf GTI or Golf R or Focus RS or Focus ST or Megane will already occupy the nominations.

Again the new BMW X3 is a step backward in the design department. Consumer Report calls it disappointing and I could not have agreed more. It should not be in this list.

Kia Stinger should take it. Although I have never driven one, it looks like it’s what going to take to turn around KIA’s image as a cheap knockoff of Japan make.

Why is the Alfa Giulia there? Wasn’t it released in 2016??

I think the Kia stinger deserves the win. It is a significant model for Kia as it shows that Kia can build performance cars.

Giulia is an amazing return to form by Alfa Romeo. But I would give it to the Stinger. It over-delivers, in my opinion. Size is quite large since it sits in between a 4 Series GC and 6 Series GC. Handling seems competent, though not class leading (that goes to BMW). What it lost in handling, it makes it up in ride. Best of all is how it looks. It looks like a Kia. Yet it wouldn’t look out of place sitting next to a Panamera. And it does this all at price cheaper than any or the Germans.

There really should be more love for the CX-5 here in Malaysia. Very much underrated with its class leading interior quality, solid handling and ever green exterior.
