2018 Mustang Cobra Jet – quarter-mile drag in mid-8s

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of a racing icon, Ford has announced the development of the 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet, which will be limited to just 68 cars available in Race Red or Oxford White.

With heavy involvement by Ford Performance, The Mustang Cobra Jet will powered by a 5.2 litre supercharged Coyote V8 engine but there’s currently no word on how much output it makes. However, Ford says the limited edition car will run a quarter mile (400 m) in the mid-eight-second range, hitting 241 km/h in the process.

For some idea just how quick that is, the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon takes 9.65 seconds to run the same distance, topping out at 225 km/h. Even so, there is one glaring difference between the two – the Mustang Cobra Jet is not a road legal car.

That’s right, the upcoming model is strictly designed for the drag strip, and is built to comply with the rules set by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), along with several National Mustang Racers Association and National Muscle Car Association classes.

Aside from the engine, the car also sports a unique four-link rear suspension, Ford nine-inch solid rear axle from Strange Engineering, NHRA-certified roll cage, Racetech FIA seats, drag race-specific coil-over suspension with specially designed Weld Racing wheels with 50th anniversary badging. Oh, all 68 examples are non-VIN production cars.
