GALLERY: 2018 Proton Preve Premium – RM72,510

First appearing quietly on Proton’s official website, the revised-for-2018 Proton Preve has arrived. Two variants are on offer here – the 1.6 Executive CVT priced at RM64,730 and RM72,510 for the 1.6 Premium CVT, charting increases of RM4,120 and RM1,193 respectively. Prices are on-the-road without insurance, and include a five-year, 150,000 km warranty.

Both versions of the updated sedan feature the same powertrain, namely a 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder engine producing 138 hp at 5,000 rpm and 205 Nm of torque between 2,000 rpm and 4,000 rpm. This drives the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission with a simulated seven-speed mode. The naturally-aspirated manual variant has been dropped from the line-up.

A host of changes aimed at improving noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels have been applied to the Preve. These include new engine and transmission mounts, new pillar fillings and carpeting, additional rubber seals to reduce wind noise and changes to eliminate air-conditioner hissing.

Other features include a new gearknob garnish, changes towards improved radio reception and new fishnet-type floor mats, and the 16-inch wheel option (on the Executive variant not shown here) gets a set of more compliant tyres. Exterior visual changes are limited to colour and trim, such as a blacked-out grille and bootlid garnish, black roof and wing mirrors. The Premium variant gets 17-inch wheels.

Standard equipment includes projector halogen headlamps with follow-me-home lighting, front and rear fog lamps, driver’s side auto up/down window operation with anti-pinch and a radio/CD head unit with Bluetooth, USB and auxiliary audio connectivity. On the safety front, all versions get six airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, stability control, active front headrests and ISOFIX rear child seat anchors.

Added to the Premium model are LED DRLs, push-button start, single-zone automatic climate control, touchscreen navigation, automatic headlamps and wipers, cruise control, auto-folding wing mirrors, paddle shifters and tinted windows. Five colours are available for the 2018 Proton Preve – Ruby Red, Carnelian Brown, Graphite Grey, Sterling Silver and Cotton White.

There’s concern over the high price, low resale value, and limited safety features such as fewer airbags. Several comments mention that the interior quality is poor, and some feel Proton is not listening to customer demands for more modern, premium features, leading to skepticism about sales prospects. Overall, the sentiment is predominantly negative, citing the model’s outdatedness and minimal upgrades.

Better buy this car. Cause in 5 years time, there won’t be anymore Protons. Everything will be Geely in Malaysia.

And our ball less Government and Proton will kowtow to Geely when Geely tells them to drop the Proton badge and close shop.

Whatever Geely says, even now, our ball less Proton bows and says YES

Proton just likes to waste money. Their CEO already said, 75% of their total sales come from Saga and Persona.

So, you can assume, the balance of 25%, bulk of it comes from Government ordered Perdanas.

Cars like Preve…hardly make 2% of sales.

So why waste money reviving the Preve? Just to keep the factory line open just for Preve cost tens of millions per year.

Isn’t it wiser to just drop the Preve line?

Now the current vendors ,bring in politicians when they r not paid or refused to lower supply prices.
The ponstan salesmen got plenty of orders from Dr.Li,to relieve headaches.
Now the year end mar 31 accounts r finalised…P1 will report another whopping loss of another Rm 500 juta…are we looking at another bailout from the new regime after May 9 ? Tun,pls NEVER NEVER NEVER bailout protong anymore,if u win and NEVER NEVER NEVER come out with Proton 2.

Proton should not have blacked out the Prevé’s boot lid garnish. At a glance, it looks like the Saga SV’s rear garnish. Only upon closer inspection, you’ll realise the Preve’s one is fully painted and not cheap matte plastic.

Still, painted or not, it makes the Prevé look unnecessarily cheap. Proton should have just chrome plated the garnish, as seen on the Perdana.

Perodua on the other hand knows how important chrome plated handles are. All of their high-spec models have chrome plated bits (most notably door handles), even their Axia.

In Europe, chrome plating is not a huge deal, even on luxury cars. But in America and Asia, the more chrome on your car = the more premium it is. Even budget cars have it. But for better or worse, Proton has always followed the European way of things (so does Hyundai-Kia).

If Proton wants to make their cars ‘look more premium’, they need only add more chrome plated parts. The Prevé Sapphire is a great example of how to make a budget car look more premium. I have no idea why Proton didn’t sell it to the public. A wasted opportunity.

The preve is really outdated. European styling says Azlan Othman, but interior looks awful. That cheap aircon knob, odometer with odd font graphics, non-integrated head unit that looked like aftermarket product, low resolution trip meter display, flimsy aircon vents, non-tactile buttons, bath mat textured soft plastics thats out of place to touch… just to name a few. Interior packaging is also not on par with Korean makes, let alone the big T & H.

Geely should just bring in the upcoming SL and replace the preve.
