British motorsport firm Mellors Elliot Motorsport (MEM) will be showcasing the newly homologated Proton Iriz R5 rally car at the forthcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed (July 4-7) in its first public appearance since receiving its homologation from the sport’s governing body, the FIA, and is now able to enter official FIA events including the World Rally Championship (WRC).
“There is no better place to bring the Proton Iriz R5 than the Goodwood Festival of Speed and show our new creation to tens of thousands of motorsport fans from across the globe,” said MEM director Chris Mellors. The Iriz is unique in being the only R5 competition vehicle to be approved for both left- and right-hand-drive layouts, which further expands the car’s reach in the worldwide rallying market, the firm said.
There is already plenty of interest in the Iriz R5, Mellors says, and the attaining of FIA homologation further adds to the demand. “We have people such as multiple Irish Tarmac Rally champion Eugene Donnelly using one which is important for the brand and its continued development, but we are always looking to expand our customer base,” Mellors said.
‘Three new builds’ have left the firm’s Derbyshire workshops with more in progress, the outfit said. The MEM-operated Proton Iriz project began life in 2016, and has made notable appearances at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Cambrian Rally, along with successes in the Grizedale Rally in December 2017 and a podium finish at the Malton Rally the month before that.
The heart of the Proton Iriz R5 is an adapted 4B11T turbocharged engine from the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X, sleeved down to a 1.6 litre capacity to meet R5 and WRC2 regulations. Its driveline is sourced from Xtrac while suspension is by Reiger. Meanwhile, brakes are sourced from Brembo and electronics from Cosworth.

This is a money wasting project. Those money spent for modificating the game over Iriz is better to use it in R&D to create a game changing car. I don’t understand why need to modificate this game over car, releasing the game changing Iriz EV is even a better choice.
Why not? Geely is paying for it. So I see no problem there.
Road legal Proton Iriz R5 konfem laku kerass!
As far as I understand, British motorsport firm Mellors Elliot Motorsport (MEM)is the only one in charge of the project. Neither Proton nor Geely are financially involved.
Geely cannot sell this car, as the manufacturer is Mellors Elliot Motorsport (MEM).
I doubt that Geely is even interested to sell pure racing cars…
Their purpose is to promoting the brand and see how far the Iriz chasis can perform.. also its motorsports.
Better than spending that money creating ur own shiok sendri racing series using old dinosars driven by amateurs.
It’s not a factory team competing in the top-tier WRC category. It’s a private tuning company using a production ready car. It’s not going to be expensive. The only investment Proton-Geely would put in, if there was any, would be donating 2-3 units to MEM. MEM is a very profitable and quite well known business with reputable partners which they source their components from. They don’t need much financial backing from the factory.
This Proton Quality is better than Hyundai Quality.
So…….in theory, i can put that engine in my iriz?
U can but u need to oso include the AWD drivetrain as well.
Tahniah!
