X247 Mercedes-AMG GLB35 4Matic officially debuts – 302 hp and 400 Nm; zero to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds

To meet the needs of power-hungry mommies and daddies everywhere, Mercedes-Benz has introduced a performance variant of the GLB, so say hello to the new Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 4Matic. Available with five or seven seats, the SUV features the same M260 engine used in the company’s A 35 models, along with other AMG goodies.

Said engine is a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol unit that makes 306 PS (302 hp) from 5,800 to 6,100 rpm and 400 Nm of torque from 3,000 to 4,000 rpm. An AMG Performance 4Matic all-wheel drive system is present as well, but unlike the A 35 cars, the GLB 35 uses an eight-speed AMG Speedshift DCT dual-clutch transmission – like the new A 45s – instead of a seven-speed unit.

Performance-wise, the SUV will sprint from a rest to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds and hit an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. When driven normally, it’ll return a fuel consumption of as low as 7.5 litres per 100 km following NEDC regulations, while CO2 emissions are as low as 171 grammes per km.

The GLB 35’s standard passive suspension has been tuned to cope with high cornering speeds and counter body roll, with redesigned steering knuckles, transverse control arms at the front axle, subframes and wheel carriers at the rear axle. Pay a little more for the AMG Ride Control system and you’ll get adaptive dampers with three modes – Comfort, Sport and Sport+ – to choose from.

Those aren’t the only modes available, as the all-encompassing AMG Dynamic Select system provides Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual modes as well. The system also features AMG Dynamics agility control, with Basic and Advanced modes activated depending on the dominant drive mode selected.

Other driving related items include an electromechanical, speed-sensitive power steering with variable ratios and an upgraded brake system. The latter consists of all-round ventilated and perforated brake discs, with those at the front measuring 350 mm and gripped by four-piston fixed calipers. Meanwhile, the rear sees 330 mm discs and single-piston floating calipers.

In terms of styling, the GLB 35 is based on the AMG Line, but with the Panamericana grille that is now synonymous with AMG models. Other cues include a front splitter, while the rear gets a diffuser, along with two round exhaust pipes and an AMG roof spoiler.

A set of 19-inch AMG five-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels in tantalum grey comes as standard, but there are three other wheel options from 19 to 21 inches available, each with two colours. Also optional is the AMG Night package that adds on high-gloss black trim and black chrome-plated tailpipes.

On the inside, red accents highlight the model’s sportiness, and this can be found on the black Artico man-made leather/Dinamica microfibre seats and belts. There’s also carbon-fibre trim in certain areas of the cabin, and the standard sport steering wheel can be upgraded to the AMG Performance steering wheel.
