The list of candidates for the 2020 European Car of the Year award has been released, and it includes no less than 35 models from different segments, which will be trimmed down as we near next year’s Geneva Motor Show in March 2020.
Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Toyota are well represented here, as the three carmakers are the only ones with four candidates each. For the Stuttgart-based company, there’s the CLA, EQC, GLB and GLS, while the latter has the Camry, Corolla, RAV4 and GR Supra. As for BMW, the latest 1 Series, Z4, X6 and X7 are all part of the 35-car list.
Meanwhile, Renault has the Captur, Clio and Zoe vying for the crown, with all other brands being represented by either one or two models. Notable mentions include the Ferrari F8 Tributo, Ford Puma, Audi e-tron, Mazda 3 and CX-30, Nissan Juke, Range Rover Evoque, Porsche 911 and Taycan, Subaru Forester as well as the Tesla Model 3. The Volkswagen camp is represented by the T-Cross and the yet-to-be-launched Mk8 Golf, which will debut soon.
The award in 2019 went to the Jaguar I-Pace, which managed to best the Alpine A110 after a tiebreaker, marking the first time the marque has won the award. Before that, the XC40 won in 2018, the Peugeot 3008 in 2017, the Opel/Vauxhall Astra in 2016, the Volkswagen Passat in 2015, Peugeot 308 in 2014 and the Mk7 Volkswagen Golf in 2013.

Honda is non existence in europe…even australiasia…except for Malaysia…very funny
Honda is in a difficult position in Europe. Because of UK’s exit from the EU, it’s unclear if they can export their cars into the EU with reasonable profit in the future. It will close it’s Swindon plant in the UK by 2021 with loss of 3,500 jobs (already announced). Toyota is not affected, they have plants in France and the Czech Republic.
Back in 1998 end, was so proud of the launch Proton Perdana V6. Superior than equivalent Hyundai sonata. But now Hyundai is No.6 in the world
You’re proud for a rebadged car? No wonder you continue to be proud about Perodua when they did nothing but rebadging.
Went through the list and I was like:
paid

Where is Honda?! Talk to their finance department!
Where is Proton and where is Geely? I thought we were the BMW of Asia
They won it last year. Normally the same brand won’t be winning in consecutive years.
No honda nominated? The much love brand in Malaysia. Sure will dissapoint many honda fan boys
European know what is best car to drive
..in Europe.
They have other demands as people in Malaysia. For example the price for petrol is about four to five times higher there. This is why still >40% of all cars sold in Europe are turbo diesel.
I vote Mercedes-Benz CLA without doubt
Game changing Nissan, Mazda, Mercedes Benz and Toyota are in the list. Where is the so-called god car Proton?
Mana Geely? Nama Volvo?
Copy paste: “They won it last year. Normally the same brand won’t be winning in consecutive years.”
knowing these europeans, the peugeot or opel is very likely to win it
I believe the EQC will win it this round.
It has to be the Taycan.
