Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) has announced alongside its 2021 financial year sales results that the Xpander has retained the title of best-selling non-national MPV in Malaysia. With 9,065 units of the locally-assembled seven-seater sold in the 2021 financial year ending March 2022, this contributed to 47.2% of the brand’s overall sales in this period.
Overall, Mitsubishi sold 19,217 units in the financial year of 2021, representing an increase of 66% over its figure for the financial year of 2020 despite total industry volume in Malaysia having shrunk by 6.7%, it said. Mitsubishi says the achievement places it “comfortably in the top three spots of the non-national automotive category”.
A price hike of RM1,949 for the Xpander to RM91,369 (on-the-road without insurance) was announced at the beginning of this month, which MMM attributed to “cost-up constraints” due to increases in the costs of materials and logistics, though the price revision was announced with the full SST exemption still factored in.
“We are aware that a large number of our customers aim to purchase their cars before the SST exemption expires by the end of June. We are continuing our best efforts to meet the booking numbers, and we have already increased our production capacity while maintaining a high level of product quality,” Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia CEO Shinya Ikeda said in a statement.
The Xpander for the Malaysian market is made in Pekan, Pahang at the Hicom Automotive Manufacturers facility, and Malaysia is the third country to produce the MPV after Indonesia and Vietnam.
Powering the Xpander is a 4A91 1.5 litre MIVEC naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 105 PS and 141 Nm of torque, and drive is sent to the front wheels through a four-speed automatic gearbox. Exterior kit on the Xpander includes bi-LED reflector headlamps with LED daytime running lights and 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels.
Meanwhile on the inside, equipment includes quilted leather seats, a 9.0-inch touchscreen head unit with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, 360-degree camera system with dashcam and more. For safety equipment, the seven-seater MPV gets two airbags, ABS, EBD, stability control, hill start assist as well as Isofix child seat anchors.

Keep it up Mitsubishi
Hmm.. why?
Xpander can sell so well coz buyers know they are getting an affordable car with Porsche assembled quality by our hardworking abams in DRB Hicom. Wolfsburg has acknowledge our abams, Stuttgart has acknowledge our abams, Jepun has acknowledge our abams, so people are confident in the built quality of cars assembled by our world class respected abams in Pekan.
When you see assembled by DRB abams, beli tanpa was2.
Only 2 airbags and without safety sensing, once new Alza launched with 20k cheaper, the sales sure koyak
The top 2 non national brands will strike soon
Good Xpander sales, but followed up with termination of Outlander (current/old model). When asked about future plan of Outlander new model, sales person said don’t know… may be yes may be no, may be Outlander may be Pajero Sport either one, told us to wait….
I have rarely seen any xpander on the road at all, which is a good thing as I don’t have to look at this monstrosity! Mitsubishi Spander would have been a better name!
Yet, Xpander are selling so well
Only 2 airbags and nothing else, yet it is hot seller? That goes to show safety features are not a push by the consumer markets, sad really. This car should not exist in our market and yet here it is a best seller no less. So PT pushing for better safety features all go to waste coz market thinks of it as bollocks so long as the car is cheap and a Japanese brand.
At least got 360 degree camera
360 camera is nothing to shout when it only has 2 airbags to share between 7 persons.
Have you test drive the Xpander, BRV, Rush or Aruz? You will know why we choose Xpander. Drivers are choosing, design, space, driving experience, handling, not ruling out safety but we can’t have it all sometimes. Personally driving a Rush with 6 airbags but after test drive an Xpander.. I understand y its the best non National MPV in Msia..
If you want best drive feeling, nothing comes close to Exora. Non nationals can sau pei
4 speed 1.5 NA just seem very under power given this is a 7 seater. Value should include drivability in the formula in the 21st century.
When you comes to driving, you will feel something different. Many xpander owner felt the different way than what you said.
Try driving Aruz, Rush and BRV.. all 1.5 litre engine. You will know what we are talking bout. We r looking for best value MPV. If a bigger engine size or a turbo 1.5 litre engine in a non national MPV, or a more advanced gearbox ,price will not be attractive. Cheers.
They don’t consider price. For that price, Xpander is better choice from its rivals Aruz/Rush/BRV. If you want more specs, of course will be pricier!
in terms of space and comfort and CP value, none can beat Proton Exora
Then y Proton Exora not selling well?
By far the Csegment MPV market leader til date not selling well? Who are you kidding.
