The next-generation Toyota Crown will no longer be a three-box sedan, but will instead take the form of an SUV. Now, patent images from Japan have revealed a much clearer idea of what the next Crown will look like. Here, we can see that the successor to the 15th-generation sedan will instead become a fastback crossover.
According to Best Car Web, the new, tall-riding Crown will measure 4,930 mm long, 1,840 mm wide and 1,540 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,850 mm. This makes the new car 20 mm longer, 40 mm wider and 80 mm taller than the current Crown, though it is 70 mm shorter of wheelbase. This will be based on the TNGA-K platform that underpins the likes of the Harrier, RAV4 and most recently the Lexus RX.
In terms of powertrain, the Japanese website also states that the upcoming Crown crossover will pack a 2.5 litre inline-four cylinder hybrid mated to a CVT, as well as a 2.4 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol hybrid paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
These powertrains will drive all four wheels for the upcoming Crown, says Best Car Web, which would make them similar to those in the Lexus RX.
The 2.5 litre hybrid should be the A25A-FXS unit with the series-parallel hybrid system packing 249 PS and 316 Nm with E-Four all-wheel-drive, while the 2.4 litre turbo petrol should be the T24A-FTS unit, which, like the 2.5L hybrid, is augmented by a rear-axle electric motor that brings 373 hp and 550 Nm of combined output in the RX 500h.
A plug-in hybrid powertrain will follow later on, and this will also displace a 2.5 litre engine capacity that will feature both 2WD and 4WD layouts. This arrangement can also be found in the Lexus RX450h+, among other Toyota group models, and this produces 185 PS and 227 Nm from the petrol engine. In the RX, the electric motors produce 182 PS and 54 PS front and rear respectively, for a total system output of 309 PS.
Other information from the Japanese source also indicate that the upcoming Crown crossover will debut on July 15, and will come in four trim levels, including an RS range-topping trim that is more driver-focused. Equipment is expected to include the latest iteration of Toyota Safety Sense, and pricing of the upcoming Crown is expected to be upwards of seven million Japanese yen (RM228,074).
