Kedah plans to build maglev LRT system in Langkawi – MoU inked with RETD Korea; Kuah to Cenang Beach

Langkawi looks set to get its own light rail transit (LRT) system after Permodalan Kedah (PKB) inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Royal Eco Train Development, Republic of Korea (RETD Korea).

As reported by Bernama and Berita Harian, the project will utilise maglev (derived from magnetic levitation) technology. State exco of industry and investment, higher education and science, technology and innovation, Dr Haim Hilman Abdullah, said RETD Korea will carry out a project study which is expected to be ready within six months.

“The results of this study will determine the length of the line, stations and related infrastructure, but basically we are planning to develop this service from the Kuah Ferry Terminal to Cenang Beach. This project will be implemented in phases before being expanded to other tourist destinations in Langkawi so that we can have the best transportation network,” said Haim Hilman.

“By conducting a comprehensive feasibility study and subsequently presenting a detailed proposal for the maglev train and the overall development of Greater Kedah, we aim to revolutionise transportation infrastructure and unlock the full potential of the region,” commented PKB CEO Mohd Azad Jasmi.

“Our collaboration with RETD Korea is not merely about signing documents, it represents a shared vision to transform Kedah into a beacon of progress and innovation,” he continued, adding that the project will stimulate economic growth, tourism and job creation.

Meanwhile, RETD Korea CEO Lee Changwook said, “the Netstream Maglev train is designed to harmonise with the breathtaking natural vistas of Langkawi, representing a leap towards modernity, powered by eco-friendly technology that minimises environmental impact, conserves energy, and maintains the pristine condition of the surroundings.”

maglev is not cheap super expensive.

currently only 3 countries having maglev train in the world, china, japan and korea.

china until now is losing money on their maglev, but their country is rich, so no issue.

not sure of any country using maglev for their lrt.

Korea using Maglev for their Incheon airport shuttle. According to the wiki the maintenance cost of that maglev is really hurting the Korean government ALOTT. With the high Korean Won and in tropical climate and location far away from Korea, Kedah really really need a deep pocket to maintain the system. Kedah should have just use an LRT system which is more feasible.

Maglev is a high speed mode of transport. Langkawi, being a very small island does not need this very expensive system. Clearly, this will be a non starter.

The maglev in China is way faster and way cheaper to maintain. It boost btheir local economy. Not sure why in Korea it is the opposite. Maybe south korea is facing massive set back in their economy to allow them to stay competitive in manufacturing. Semua anjing Amerika is facing the same problem. Only China and Russia have deflation (harga jatuh) while the rest of the world who suka sangat org putih ni are facing Inflation

Public transportation in Malaysia has always required subsidies because it cannot generate profits on its own as a mode of transportation. To keep the system running, the operator needs to be highly resourceful in finding alternative sources of revenue. All the best!

Rasa rasa yang mungkin bina jabatan ke Langkawi lebih murah lagi daripada bina maglev ke sana…

The utmost motive of the project is ‘Corrupting the state money’ as much as possible from this project. From top to the bottom, everyone will lapsap the state money. Maglev train for a tourist destination like langkawi is unnecessary. Already things/food in langkawi very much expensive compared with other east asian tourist destination. With this high cost maglev train even local repeat tourist also won’t come
