Proton trademarks eMas 3 and 5, eMas 7 PHEV – more EVs, PHEV based on Geely Galaxy Starship 7 coming?

Geely Galaxy Starship 7

The forthcoming Proton eMas 7 (stylised as e.MAS 7) is just one of several models set to be launched under the carmaker’s new electric vehicle (EV) brand. Recent trademark filings with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) suggest the line-up will also include the eMas 3 (e.MAS 3) as well as the eMas 5 (e.MAS 5).

Filing trademarks is not an uncommon practice among carmakers in order to lay claim to certain names for their models, although it is no guarantee that they will be used – remember when Proton trademarked the Idaman, Persada, Exia, Esfora names?

Of course, the eMas 3 and eMas 5 names have a high likelihood of being used given Proton will likely want to expand its range of eMas offerings after the eMas 7 goes on sale, as teased by the company prior to the brand’s launch.

For now, there’s no official word that there will be an eMas 3 and eMas 5, although the latter could be based on Geely’s Geometry Xingyuan, with the EV being shown to Proton eMas dealers not too long ago.

A check with MyIPO also shows Proton trademarking eMas 7 PHEV (e.MAS 7 PHEV), which suggests a plug-in hybrid model is also on its way. The ‘7’ suggests it to be in the same class as the eMas 7, although the eMas 7 is a pure EV and isn’t available with a PHEV system.

A model that could fit the bill is the upcoming Geely Galaxy Starship 7, which was revealed by China’s ministry of industry and information technology (MIIT) earlier this month and will reportedly be positioned slightly above the Galaxy E5, the twin to the eMas 7.

Previewed by a concept at this year’s Beijing Auto Show, the Galaxy Starship 7 is midsize SUV measuring 4,740 mm long, 1,905 mm wide and 1,685 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,755 mm. Despite the suggested model positioning mentioned earlier, the eMas 7 is actually comparable in size to the Galaxy Starship 7 at 1,901 mm wide, 1,670 mm tall and with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm, although its overall length is less by 125 mm at 4,615 mm.

The Galaxy Starship 7’s PHEV powertrain consists of a BHE15-BFN 1.5 litre inline-four petrol engine, an electric motor and a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. Further details are expected to be released when the SUV goes on sale in China sometime in Q4 this year.

Proton isn’t revealing what will come after the eMas 7, so we’ll have to wait and see if the eMas 3, eMas 5 or eMas 7 PHEV becomes a reality. As a fun fact, Proton’s has used the word emas before when it presented a range of hybrid city car concepts 14 years ago at the Geneva Motor Show.
