BYD M6 EV MPV to have seven seats, launch tomorrow

The BYD M6 is set to make its Malaysian debut tomorrow, and while the local specifications of the all-electric MPV haven’t been revealed, we now know that it will be offered as a seven-seater for our market. A teaser image posted by BYD Malaysia on its Facebook page over the weekend highlight the particular seating configuration.

While the model is also available as a six-seater in Indonesia, where it is priced from 379 million rupiah (RM109,500) to 429 million rupiah (RM123,900), and Thailand, where it is offered only as a six-seater, priced from 829,900 baht (RM106,800) to 929,900 baht (RM119,600), word is that we won’t be getting this layout.

The M6, essentially a revised version of the second-generation e6, is available in two power outputs in the above markets, and this is likely to also be the case here. As for variants, we can expect to see two, in line with how BYD model introductions have been made here.

The base variant features a 55.4 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that powers a front-mounted electric motor with 163 PS (161 hp or 120 kW) and 310 Nm of torque, which is good for a NEDC-rated range of 420 km and a 0-100 km/h time of 10.1 seconds.

The higher-spec version will get a larger 71.8 kWh battery for 530 km of range (NEDC) and a higher specific output of 204 PS (201 hp or 150 kW) to lower the century sprint time to 8.6 seconds.

As for charging, the base M6 can accept up to 89 kW of DC fast charging (85 kW in Thailand), while the highor output version can handle up to 115 kW, the latter taking 40 minutes to charge the battery from 10 to 80%. Meanwhile, AC charging is limited to 7 kW for all variants. We’ll have all the specifications and kit detailed when the MPV is launched tomorrow, so stay tuned.

Hmm.. Honestly I prefer a seating layout of 2-3-2. A family of five would fit perfectly for balik kampung where the boot is no longer useful for occupants as it is loaded with luggage and stuff. If they make it an ICE variant it would sell better to beat the range anxiety.
