Malaysia could collect RM100 million from VEP in 2024

Revenue collection from vehicle entry permits (VEPs) issued to Singapore-registered vehicles entering Malaysia is expected to exceed RM100 million this year, reported The Star.

The sum collected from the issuance of VEPs last year amounted to RM91 million, said transport minister Anthony Loke. “With the expected increase in vehicles from Singapore entering Johor this year, I estimate that the collection would surpass RM100 million,” Loke said.

Meanwhile, talks will be held with the finance ministry on ways to improve public transport in Johor with the revenue generated from the VEP, the transport minister said, adding that the revenue collected is channeled into the consolidated fund.

“Of the RM20 collected from each VEP, RM5 is given back to the Johor government. We will negotiate with the finance ministry for the VEP collection to be channelled for public transport purposes in Johor,” he said, and that the revenue could be used to fund more bus routes in Johor once the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link connecting Johor Bahru and Singapore is complete.

In May this year, Loke announced that Singapore-registered vehicles entering Malaysia will be required to have a vehicle entry permit VEP from October 1. Construction of the Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link has reached 83% completion as of July, and it is on track to commence operations on January 1, 2027, the Malaysian transport minister said last month.
