JPJ staff to wear bodycams for transparency – Loke

In a bid to enhance enforcement transparency, Road Transport Department (JPJ) personnel will be given body cameras to wear, Transport Minister Anthony Loke has said, according to a Bernama report.

Loke said the measure, which would improve JPJ officers’ effectiveness in the field, particularly concerning heavy vehicles, was specifically requested by JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli to ensure the highest standards of image, safety and integrity for officers on duty.

“… the use of body cameras not only protects the image and integrity of JPJ but also safeguards the officers themselves. As I have mentioned before, sometimes our officers face criticism, humiliation and various accusations. With the body camera, JPJ officers are protected, as any evidence during their enforcement actions can be captured,” he said.

JPJ planning and operations deputy director-general Datuk Jazmanie Shafawi had earlier been reported as saying that the use of body cameras for enforcement officers would enhance integrity among officers and improve public trust, as well as prevent common misunderstandings that often arise during enforcement.

“(Discussions are underway) to secure immediate funding for the procurement, and I hope that JPJ officers will be equipped with the body cameras within this year,” he said.

Why waste public money? Just let the people record with their phone. Same goes to the police.

PMX, please swap Antonio with Hanayo. We need someone who’s good at preaching discipline and able to convert corrupt enforcers into honest hardworking people. They see Antonio selling number plates day in day out, will only learn bad habits and think of making quick bucks only

how about a new rule where if there is no bodycam footage, any arrests and saman will be automatically invalid? this ensure the officers wont turn on and off the cams as they like

This is actually a good idea. Nope, a brilliant idea.

But I don’t know whether law makers can actually see this comment or not.

  • With modern advancements, camera devices are significantly more reliable than in the past. If the monitoring system is effective, the JPJ office will no longer be able to rely on repeating the same excuses.
