JPJ staff to wear bodycams for transparency – Loke

In a bid to enhance enforcement transparency, Road Transport Department (JPJ) personnel will be given body cameras to wear, Transport Minister Anthony Loke has said, according to a Bernama report.

Loke said the measure, which would improve JPJ officers’ effectiveness in the field, particularly concerning heavy vehicles, was specifically requested by JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli to ensure the highest standards of image, safety and integrity for officers on duty.

“… the use of body cameras not only protects the image and integrity of JPJ but also safeguards the officers themselves. As I have mentioned before, sometimes our officers face criticism, humiliation and various accusations. With the body camera, JPJ officers are protected, as any evidence during their enforcement actions can be captured,” he said.

JPJ planning and operations deputy director-general Datuk Jazmanie Shafawi had earlier been reported as saying that the use of body cameras for enforcement officers would enhance integrity among officers and improve public trust, as well as prevent common misunderstandings that often arise during enforcement.

“(Discussions are underway) to secure immediate funding for the procurement, and I hope that JPJ officers will be equipped with the body cameras within this year,” he said.
