2026 Mazda CX-5 – third-gen SUV gets leaked before debut; evolutionary design change; hybrid tech

An image that purportedly shows the third-generation Mazda CX-5 has surfaced on the CocheSpias forum, with the Instagram page of Car Design News cited as the original source.

Closely resembling camouflaged prototypes spotted during testing, the all-new CX-5’s proportions and window shape appear to echo the outgoing model. However, the body panels have been overhauled and the SUV seems to cut a more upright figure, suggesting an evolutionary approach.

Design cues that immediately stand out include the headlamps, which now curve into the grille in a way reminiscent of the Mercedes-Benz EQC. Meanwhile, the grille’s shape appears familiar, although it does with a new mesh insert as well as a thinner surround.

Further down, the sculpted bumper has a more aggressive look to it, flaring out at the sides and with a much larger lower intake for a more imposing look. You’ll also notice black plastic cladding, although it has been reported that higher trim levels will get body-coloured panels instead.

There’s no rear shot, but spyshots indicate slim LED taillights and exposed exhaust pipes. Same goes for the interior, which is expected to be made more upscale in line with Mazda’s push into premium territory, accompanied by the latest infotainment and other technologies.

The next CX-5 will debut Mazda’s Skyactiv-Z petrol engine that aims to delivery better fuel efficiency and performance, although this is only set to be added in 2027. A self-charging hybrid powertrain with an existing powertrain is said to tide things over until then.

Should have just brought in the CX-50 and called it a day. Even the CX-3 is going to be replaced by the CX-20 so why still retain the single digit naming convention since you wanted to go one step higher in the premium segment?
