JPJ to launch rehab course for drivers of commercial vehicles with suspended PSV and/or GDL licences

The road transport department (JPJ) plans to launch a rehabilitation course this November for commercial vehicle drivers whose licences have been suspended. This comes several days after the department revealed earlier this month that the licences of commercial vehicle drivers involved in crashes will be suspended until investigations are completed.

At that time, the department also said it will ensure that suspended individuals be required to undergo and pass a refresher course before their licences are reactivated or removed from the suspension list.

In a report posted by FMT yesterday, JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the pilot programme was specifically for those holding a public service vehicle (PSV) licence and/or goods driving licence (GDL). He added that the objective of the programme was to improve road safety and enhance the professionalism of drivers.

“Right now, drivers who have their PSV and GDL licences reinstated can immediately hit the road and they don’t get any follow-up training. We believe additional and refresher training is necessary to remind them of the rules, as some may have forgotten them,” said Aedy Fadly.

The transport ministry will be responsible for finalising the course syllabus and other implementation details, which could include expanding the programme to cover other driving licence categories. “We may introduce a refresher course for heavy vehicle drivers,” Aedy Fadly said.
