The refresher course will be organised by the department at locations to be determined later and drivers will be charged fees to cover the cost of the course,” said Aedy Fadly.

He added that five commercial vehicle drivers have been suspended, including those involved in the in the fatal Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) lorry crash in Teluk Intan as well as the bus that hit a height restriction barrier in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan recently on Saturday.

On another matter, Aedy Fadli said since the enforcement of wearing safety belts came into effect in stages from July 1, the department has issued 510 compound notices to express buses, tour buses and goods vehicles, and that 80 of the notices were issued to drivers and 396 to passengers and attendants.

Please allow the foreign workers to get license and drive the bus or truck to settle the manpower shortage on drivers. This is practising by Singapore currently employ foreign workers to drive buses or trucks as local people do not want to do.

In Malaysia current situation almost all express buses or trucks, logistic companies, and all companies that needed driver for delivery goods are begging the “local” driver to turn up to work. Most of the drivers who turn up then companies incentivise them to take few more trips because other drivers are absence from work. Those drivers who eager for money then by no choice take drug to make them awake to take long haul journey.

Hiring foreign workers like Nepal, Bangla etc will behave better than local people because employer might withdraw their work permit if they violate the rules whereby local Malaysia is hard to control because they scare of nothing.

  • Long overdue. At least there’s some action being taken. However, I believe that the company should be responsible for the driver as they hired the driver, and whatever discipline issues must be taken seriously by the company. Suspending both driver and the company is a good move, as life is at stake for road users.
