‘Belok kiri jika tiada kenderaan dan pejalan kaki’ sign – DBKL reminds drivers that the left turn is conditional

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has said on Facebook that based on its observations, many drivers remain unaware or inattentive about the Belok kiri jika tiada kenderaan dan pejalan kaki (turn left if there are no oncoming vehicles and pedestrians) sign at traffic lights.

The post explains that the sign allows drivers to turn left on a red light only if there are no vehicles coming from the other direction and no pedestrians crossing – “If there is a vehicle passing through the intersection or a pedestrian who wants to cross, you must stop.”

Not sure about you, but yours truly has more often been immediately behind vehicles that stay stopped at this sign despite the coast being crystal clear. Of course, safety always comes first, and to give the car in front the benefit of the doubt, I wait for green, but the guys behind me may not be so patient…

  • What if the sign is not visible from your car angle ? And foreigner may not understand Malay . If you want to do this make it applicable across the country

If in Japan, signs are in Japanese.
If in Germany, signs are in German.
If in Russia, there is no sign.
Why should we cater to foreigners when foreign countries don’t have in BM for us?

      • There shouldn’t be language at all. Simplicity over 3 liners.

Just follow international standard to have a reflective/illuminated green arrow pointing left fixed left to the red light.

Introduce to traffic code that this green arrow allows “Left on Red” after yield to any vehicle/pedestrian.

What’s wrong to have BM? You’re in Malaysia not some other British countries

However I hate it when they just blatantly come out of the junction even when there are clearly vehicles using the road. They simply don’t understand it or abuse the signage for their own convenient.

  • IPTA’s toilet now have Chinese language in the signage. While we are at there, they should add Indian Tamil script as well. And also DBKL should consider to add these 2 languages in their signage too. English is useless. #DasarTakRetiBahasa

You are worried about driver not aware of the signboard?
Come to Melaka. Cars and motorcycles are abusing this signboard like crazy. They just turn regardless whether there is incomning vehicles or not until the incoming cars have to yield. Whoever that come out with this idea is bloody stupid to think that Malaysians will follow the conditions.

    (When this signboard exists)
Car Infront: Sees car from opposite turning into… Stop.
    Car Behind: (Honk!!!!)
    Inilah Malaysia driver’s standard

    • Reeducate or ban! on Dec 02, 2025 at 10:58 am

this is so true. I think gment shld reeducate those driver with more than 3 samans. Many driver & mbikers too impatient, inconsiderate and uncivilised. Tailgating, honks, flashing light, not giving way when u oredi turn the signal light long ago. And plz stop car from full black tint, difficult for driver to see the road status infront or beside the car.

Unfortunately Malaysians are retarded. You made this kind of sign to ease the traffic, some people dont want to move when no traffics, some people dont look and just go, and some people are waiting for traffic to clear and people honk from behind.

Remove the sign completely. People need to learn common sense. With the signage put up every other vehicle now claim they have right of way….until one accident happen then all hell break loose.
Just remove the sign and take enforcement more seriously. If no incoming, good – If people turn without regards then thats the culprits.
Sekarang ni masalah susulannya ialah orang yang kat belakang tu bukan nampak ada incoming atau takde – diorg tau nak hon aje sepanjang panjang lampu merah ke hijau ke.

  • And this is not a Kl – only issue. The problem has occur all over the country although I’m glad DBKL brought it up on media.

Sarawak roads have this sign decades ago and I’ve not seen accidents at those junctions nor heard local drivers complaining about it. In fact, exits from T-junction and into roundabout have much higher accident rates.

    • Nothing to do with signboards on Sabah and Sarawak. They are civilised road users, with good considerations.

  • Beg you do NOT start on Dec 02, 2025 at 10:49 pm

This is bad bad bad decision to start. Countries like Singapore is already turning back on this slowly removing this option because many accidents over the years, mostly fatal, because of this. Pls do not start, once behaviour built, it is very hard if not impossible to remove. Pls don’t start… pls
