Man caught pumping RON95 into Singapore-registered car with taped registration plate identified by police

A man who was spotted being “creative” in order to fuel up a Singapore-registered vehicle with subsidised RON 95 at a petrol station in Kulai, Johor has been identified by the police as a Singapore permanent resident, The Star reports.

“We have gotten in touch and directed him to come to the traffic department at Kulai’s police headquarters to assist with investigations,” said Kulai OPCD Asst Comm Tan Seng Lee, who noted that the owner of the vehicle is currently in Singapore. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 108(3)(e) of the Road Transport Act 1987 with regard to exhibiting an altered or tampered vehicle registration number.

In a one-minute video posted by SG Road Vigilante on Facebook on January 3, 2026, the man is seen fuelling up a car which had the first and last letters of its Singapore registration plate covered with black tape. When asked if he was Malaysian by an unidentified individual, the man replied that he was.

Once again, the rule is simple: if a vehicle has a foreign registration plate and not a Malaysian one, it can only be fuelled up with RON 97 and not RON 95. It goes without saying that MyKad holders driving foreign registered vehicles are not eligible for subsidised RON 95. However, Malaysians with a Singapore driving licence but drive Malaysian-registered cars can apply for subsidised RON 95.
