Remember the viral video of a Singapore-registered Volkswagen Jetta refuelling with RON 95 petrol in Johor earlier in the month? The car had obscured ‘S and ‘M’ letters on both ends of its plate (SLJ 8967M) in a bid to pass off as a Malaysian-registered car.
The video caught the attention of the police, and the driver surrendered to PDRM soon after. He has now pleaded guilty in court, which handed him a RM9,000 fine, Malay Mail reported.
The 64-year-old Malaysian with Singapore permanent resident status, Long Sa Kow, pleaded guilty to a charge of displaying a number plate that did not belong to the vehicle at a petrol station on Jalan Johor Bahru-Ayer Hitam at 10.30 pm on January 2.
He was charged under Section 108(3)(e) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a fine of up to RM20,000, a maximum prison sentence of five years, or both upon conviction.
During mitigation, Long’s lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation requested a minimum fine, saying that he’s a pensioner with no regular income, supporting his unemployed wife and two school-going children. The DPP asked for a deterrent sentence.
