  • 2025 Royal Enfield Bear 650 unveiled, scrambler style

2025 Royal Enfield Bear 650 unveiled, scrambler style

Shown on its website is the 2025 Royal Enfield Bear 650, sporting a very retro scrambler style. The Bear 650 is named after the Big Bear Run, a desert race in California, US, that was first held in 1921 and still running today.

The name commemorates “Fast” Eddie Mulder’s win of the Big Bear Run in 1960, riding a Royal Enfield 500 single, the trail going from Lucerne to Fawnskin and back. With that in mind, the Bear 650 comes with a number “249” racing plate, celebrating Fast Eddie’s race number.

The Bear 650 uses the Royal Enfield 648 cc parallel-twin as its basis. Going by the specifications sheet, the base 650 twin produces 47 hp at 7.250 rpm with 52 Nm of torque at 5,250 rpm.

However, Royal Enfield says the Bear 650 gets more torque lower down the rev range than either the Royal Enfield 650 GT or 650 Interceptor. This equates to 46.7 hp at 7,150 rpm with 56.5 Nm of torque at 5,150 rpm going through a six-speed gearbox to the rear wheel.

Spoked wheel sizing is 19-inches in front and 17-inches at the rear for the Bear 650, wearing 100/90 and 140/80 tubed tyres. Braking is done with single hydraulic discs front and rear, with two-channel ABS as standard.

Weight for the Bear 650 is listed at 216 kg, with 13.6-litres of fuel carried in the tank. In Malaysia, there are four versions of the Royal Enfield 650 on sale, the Interceptor at RM33,700, and the Continental GT 650, retailing at RM35,600, while the Super Meteor 650 and Shotgun 650 are priced at RM37,900 and RM34,900, respectively.

Consistency with back-to-back second places in Indonesia and Japan along with mistakes by rivals saw Ogura clear the field by 60 championship points heading to Philip Island, Australia where he came in fourth.

With inclement weather at Buriram bringing the race to an early close, the full 20 points awarded to Ogura saw the 23-year old bringing home the Moto2 champion’s crown with two races left in the calendar. • 2025 Yamaha MT-07 updated – less weight, ride modes

2025 Yamaha MT-07 updated – less weight, ride modes

Going on a diet, the 2025 Yamaha MT-07 is now lighter, has a new face, new front suspension and is loaded with electronics. There will be three colour options in 2025 – Ice Storm, Icon Blue and Tech Black while in Malaysia, the MT-07 last had a recommended retail price of RM38,888 in 2019.

The 2025 MT-07 should really be called a new model as the list of upgrades and changes is long. Starting with the engine, the Crossplane 2 mill now comes with customisable riding modes and a model variant with the Yamaha Y-AMT automatic gearbox.

Displacement is still 690 cc, with liquid-cooling, DOHC and four-valves per cylinder while emissions is now EU 5+ compliant. The sound of the engine is enhanced with the use of four openings in the tank cover that amplify engine sound, channeling it towards the rider.

2025 Yamaha MT-07 updated – less weight, ride modes

The six-speed gearbox on the MT-07 is now fitted with an assist and slipper clutch reducing the amount of force required to pull in the clutch lever by around 22%. The clutch inhibits the amount of back-torque and excessive engine braking which can be generated when changing down the gears, allowing for more consistent and accurate corner entry.

As for the Yamaha Automated Manual Transmission (Y-AMT) system, the rider can choose between D and D+ modes when in automatic transmission (AT) mode. D mode delivers a balanced shift for everyday riding, while D+ offers a more sporting ride with upshifts coming higher in the rev range.

The MT-07 Y-AMT also features cruise control, offering a more relaxing ride on longer highway journeys. There is also MT (Manual Transmission), developed to put the rider fully in command. Gear changes are activated through a see-saw switch using the thumb and index finger to upshift with the plus lever, and downshift with the minus lever, or opt for a single-finger operation for sportier riding.

Big changes in braking and suspensions as well for the MT-07 with dual four-piston radially mounted brake calipers delivering stronger and consistent braking power. Suspension is revised, now with 41 mm diameter upside-down forks and a die-cast triple clamp, a first for a large capacity Yamaha, reducing overall weight.

2025 Yamaha MT-07 updated – less weight, ride modes

The chassis for the MT-07 is all new from the headstock back. Despite looking similar to the previous frame, the chassis now weighs 14.8 kg, while offering between 12 to 13% increased torsional, longitudinal and lateral rigidity.

New spin-forged wheels are added into mix for the MT-07, which are 480 grams lighter than those on the previous MT-07. This gives a 4% reduction in inertia at the front and rear which the resulting improvement in handling agility.

For the first time in the MT-07 is ride-by-wire, giving three YRC (Yamaha Ride Control) settings – Sport and Street, with a third Custom setting – which change the power characteristics to suit the rider’s preferences and road conditions. This also allows for switchable two-level traction control, Y-AMT transmission and the optional equipment quickshifter.

2025 Yamaha MT-07 updated – less weight, ride modes

Everything is controlled via the 5-inch TFT-LCD screen with new multiple function switchgear on the left handlebar pod. The turn signals now have a ‘three flash’ function that blinks the signals three times for lane changes while self-cancelling is standard as well as the Emergency Stop Signalling system that flashes the signals on hard braking.

The riding position on the MT-07 has changed, with the handlebar position now 18 mm wider, 22 mm lower and 9.3 mm further back while footpeg position is 10 mm lower. Seat height is set at 805 mm with the new fuel tank cover is narrower allowing for the rider to grip the fuel tank with their knees while capacity remains the same at 14-litres.

The new two-piece seat assembly comes with revised size, shape and padding for both rider and passenger. These combine to make it easier for the rider to mount the motorcycle and support movement of body weight while riding.

  • Review: 2024 Yamaha PG-1, RM6,998 off-road kapchai

    Review: 2024 Yamaha PG-1, RM6,998 off-road kapchai

Fun bikes are fun, perhaps none more so than the 2024 Yamaha PG-1, priced at RM6,998 in Malaysia. Yamaha touts the PG-1 as an “outdoor lifestyle” kapchai and when the review unit from Hong Leong Yamaha Motor (HLYM) was handed to us, we were intrigued as to what it actually is.

Make no mistake, the small motorcycle segment in Malaysia is burgeoning, especially after Covid-19 and the interminable rounds of movement control orders Malaysians had to endure. It was during that time that many discovered and in many cases, re-discovered, the benefits of riding a kapchai or scooter.

Food delivery riders notwithstanding, there were a number of riders getting on small displacement motorcycles for commuting, running about and just generally having fun. Because small bikes are fun.

    Review: 2024 Yamaha PG-1, RM6,998 off-road kapchai

You can make all the rempit jokes you like but riders like that are a small part of the riding population despite garnering the most media coverage. Which has led other riders to adopt a kapchai or scooter for recreational travel and just generally having fun, because, don’t you know, motorcycles are great for two wheel therapy.

This brings us to the Yamaha PG-1, and in Malaysia, its direct competition, the Aveta Ranger Max. The PG-1 does not pretend to be anything other than it is, a kapchai (underbone motorcycle for you pendants) that is meant for the rider to go out and enjoy the ride and themselves.

Read the review of the Yamaha PG-1 after the jump.

Entering the litre-class naked sports motorcycle market in Europe is the 2025 Honda Hornet CB1000. Not only that, Honda has seen fit to release the Hornet CB1000 SP with upgraded suspension and brakes as well.

As Honda’s flagship naked sports bike, the CB1000 joins the Hornet CB750 and the Hornet CB500 in the catalogue. Colour choices for the Hornet CB1000 are Grand Prix Red, Mat Iridium Gray Metallic and Pearl Glare White while the Hornet CB1000 SP comes in only one colour, Mat Ballistic Black Metallic with gold-anodised fork legs and unique ‘desert gold’ metallic wheels.

The Hornet CB1000 carries the inline-four cylinder taken from the Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade superbike (priced at RM208,000 in Malaysia). Power is detuned from the Fireblade’s 214 hp to 150.1 heat 11,000 rpm with 104 Nm of torque at 9,000 rpm.

The frame for the Hornet CB1000 is brand new and features twin spars for a high degree of torsional rigidity. The big Hornet also features aggressive styling with compact twin LED projector headlights and broad Hornet fuel tank.

This gives the CB1000 a brand shouldered profile when viewed from the front along with a narrow waist before tapering to the rear trellis-style sub-frame. Honda says the Hornet CB1000 comes with “multiple riding modes” including Rain, Standard, Sport and two user customisable modes.

Diffrentiating the Hornet CB1000 and the CB1000 SP version is suspension, the standard Hornet getting Showa’s ‘big piston’ SFF-BP upside down forks while the SP adds an Öhlins TTX36 rear shock. Similarly, the base model CB1000 gets Nissin brake callipers in front and the upgraded SP model comes with Brembo Stylema callipers.
