Sunway BRT expected to begin operations by June 9

Malaysia’s first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Bandar Sunway is nearing completion and is expected to be operational by June 9. The service will be Malaysia’s first proper electric bus service, as well as the first fully-elevated BRT system in South East Asia.

The new 5.4 km Sunway Line is being built by Prasarana Malaysia Berhad in collaboration with Sunway Group as part of the government’s Public-Private Partnership (PPP) programme. It connects the Sunway commercial centre with the Setia Jaya KTM Komuter station and the USJ7 LRT station, the latter being part of the upcoming Kelana Jaya Line extension.

The RM634 million project is aimed at improving traffic flow in the Bandar Sunway and Subang Jaya area, as well as to promote higher productivity and a healthier lifestyle for more than 500,000 people living in the area, including over 30,000 students. Prasarana expects a ridership of 2,400 passengers per hour, eventually reaching 5,200 passengers per hour by 2035.

Seven stations will be built to serve Setia Jaya, Mentari Business Park, Sunway Lagoon, Sunway Medical Centre, Monash University Malaysia and USJ7. The Monash University station is a “park ‘n’ ride” facility featuring 1,153 parking bays, including 102 female bays, 23 handicapped bays and 121 motorcycle bays.

The 15 BYD-badged electric buses that service the route have a top speed of 80 km/h, are fully equipped with universal access facilities and feature a capacity of 67 passengers, with 25 of them seated. Range is quoted at 250 km – or 23 trips a day – enabling the buses to run for 12 hours in between charges.

Prasarana says that there are more BRT lines at various locations in the pipeline, with the National Land Public Transport Master Plan showing 12 more set to be built.

“They are planned at areas identified as having desperately high demand and without access to planned systems, such as in Ampang, Melawati, Subang and Kepong,” said Prasarana’s group managing director Azmi Abdul Aziz. “However, the Land Public Transport Commission and the government will decide on building future BRTs.”

This is a good move. Hopefully more of this can be implemented to other busy cities in Malaysia.

This is a honestly good move! If the price is reasonable that is.A good thing is that the top speed is 80 kmh.So bye to buses speeding at 140 kmh-170km on Karak Highway. The electric motor can help the ever increasing pollution in KL especially in Mont Kiara.

    • not all china product come in cheap, if its proper built and researched product it will more. Just like Fotile Kitchen Appliances – Its cost almost or more than Electrolux or Bosch and its China brand.

Things are not the same now and they are getting better and our Proton are still like a baby crawling all over the place

Many people don’t understand what BRT is. It’s an elevated roadway similar to the LRT but instead of using trains, they use special electric buses. These buses will not go anywhere else except those routes.

This is just another type of LRT, just a bit cheaper to construct.

Expect kiasu Malaysian drivers (and especially motorcyclists) to use the bus route as shortcut to get to their destinations.

      Don’t put your hopes up.

Subang congestion is due to Federal highway/Tujuan and the Seafield intersection on Kesas/Kewajipan.

Neither of these will be reduced by the BRT.

Seafield/USJ1 needs a proper interchange/flyover, not stupid traffic lights.

  • Many seems to expect the fare to be cheap but all forgot that each of these EV buses cost RM 1 juta.
Unless Rapid wants to be a charity organisation that constantly bleeds red and then being bashed for loosing money, it would need to price it to justify ROI

BRT operational on June 2015, LRT when ? no use having one operational while the other is only operational one year later……great planning. Malaysia Boleh

    • You’re not that bright.. are you? Trains have way more track testing period compared to busses. You dont have to wait for both to be operational and then be open to the public dude, its gonna improve traffic one way or another

You’re the one not so bright.

BRT and LRT extension were supposed to complete together, but with LRT contractors keep screwing up, causing accidents and deaths, LRT’s completion got pushed back!!

By original timeline, LRT is supposed to be completed and running today! But with all those accidents going on, they now say it’s gonna be mid 2016. My foot la, looking at their construction pace, I’m confident even MRT will complete (scheduled mid 2017) and run first, despite LRT started earlier!

Hope it improves traffic there. Also the walls on the side of the track seem a bit low. Perhaps its not fully completed yet?

This is absolutely a good news and credit to Sunway group and Rapid KL to workout this program. There are many resident areas growing rapidly and the traffic is worsening. Many developers will focus only on their profit from the project and never ever care of the traffic condition. For example, traffic in Puchong is worsening from year to year with many housing development project from different developers. Those developers never care about the road condition and unwilling to participate into this kind of BRT project because it will affect their profit. These developers are short-sighted once project done nothing related to them anymore.

I work in the area so I know exactly how and what this is. Though I have to endure about a year of traffic jam and bad road condition due to the construction sites, I can tell you this project is one of the well executed ones in term of timeframe and safety. Good work!

    Sigh….Entire BRT line.

Only 1100 parking spots for park and ride.
Most used by Monash students anyway.

As with the LRT/MRT/Monorial, parking seems to be an afterthought. The worst is KL Sentral with stratospheric parking charges…..

as I work at shenzhen which is BYD home turf….BYD electric taxi and bus is easy to be found. the electric bus is interesting as it is quite and better those those china build diesel bus (very noisy due to poor build)…i guess the only complain or comment is the lack of space for seats…. but since this BRT is not long route then it should be ok. the engine or motor for the bus seem to be located on top of the tires so it actually took many space which is why you notice it can take 60+ passenger but only 25seats. Another concern is whether the bus can withstand 365 days of hot / humid weathr as Shenzhen or china are not 365days as hot as us.
