Maserati marks 100th with 50,000th car at Grugliasco

Maserati 50000 Grugliasco Plant

Maserati celebrated its 100th anniversary on December 1, 2014, and to make the day even more special, the firm’s Avv. Giovanni Agnelli Plant in Grugliasco reached the milestone of 50,000 units produced.

The plant, where the new Quattroporte and Ghibli saloon are manufactured, was officially inaugurated on January 30, 2013 and with a production ramp-up designed to maximise the quality of the finished product, it has been possible to reach the 50k mark in just 22 months, less than two years.

Car number 50,000 is a Quattroporte S Q4 in the new Grigio Maratea paint and red/black upholstery. It’s headed for the US market. Maserati has achieved a new sales record in North America this year, with more than 10,700 units delivered in the first 10 months of the year.

Maserati 100 plaque Bologna

Back in Bologna, the city council affixed a plaque to permanently recall the Maserati brothers’ first workshop in the city. It was on December 1, 1914, at number 1A Via de Pepoli that Alfieri, that Ettore and Ernesto opened their “car repair workshop and garage.”

The “one-man business registration application” was submitted ten days later at the nearby Palazzo della Mercanzia, in what is now home to the Bologna Chamber of Commerce. The application was accepted and registered four days later. This was the start of Maserati’s long history – based in Bologna until 1939, centred in Modena since then.

The Trident brand is currently in the process of transformation from a boutique carmaker to credible rival of mainstream premium German brands. In 2012, it shifted 6,300 units. By 2015, it aims to do 50,000 units a year. This growth will be underpinned by the Quattroporte, Ghibli and upcoming Levante SUV.
