The 2016 Kia Optima has been officially launched in the US. Unveiled previously in New York, the Americans get five different variants, aside from a smaller turbocharged engine to choose from. Aesthetically, the US variants are styled in the same manner as the Euro-spec Kia Optima GT. The trims are labelled as LX, LX 1.6T, EX, SX and SXL, and most specs remain the same as before, when it was first seen in New York.

Aside from the bodykit the bigger fourth-gen Kia Optima receives, the exterior is also fitted with a hot-stamped tiger nose grille on the SX and SXL variants, while HID headlights with Dynamic Bending Lamps (DBL) come as standard. On the rear, the Optima features LED halo-style lights and a choice of 16- to 18-inch wheels are available. New paint schemes include vibrant blue, dynamic grey and deep red.

Inside, one can find the use of soft-touch materials and stitchings, applied to the doors and dash panels and Nappa leather with either a “rich merlot” or “dark aubergine” shades. Also, it comes with power-adjustable heated and ventilated seats for the driver and front passenger. Aside from the UVO connectivity system and a standard six-speaker system, a 10-speaker system with Harman/Kardon Quantum Logic, Clari-Fi and a 630-watt digital amplifier can be specified.

Safety-wise, the US-market Optima also receives Advanced Smart Cruise Control (ASCC), Blind Spot Detection (BSD) Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). Rear Parking Assist System (RPAS), Front Collision Warning System (FCWS), Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) and High Beam Assist (HBA) are also available.

Engine options include a 2.4 litre four-cylinder GDI engine that makes 185 hp/241 Nm for the LX and EX models, and a turbocharged 2.0 litre GDI engine that produces 245 hp/352 Nm for the SX and SXL variants. Both engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. There’s also an LX 1.6 T model that gets a 1.6 litre turbocharged engine with 178 hp and 264 Nm of torque, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Prices of the Optima in the US starts at USD$21,840 (RM90,300) for the base LX 2.4 variant, while the LX 1.6 T goes for USD$23,990 (RM99,200). The EX 2.4 is priced at USD$24,890 (RM102,900), the SX 2.0 T at USD$29,690 (RM110,200) and the top-of-the-range SXL 2.0 T at USD$35,790 (RM147,800).
