Ten toll plazas go cashless starting tomorrow including MEX, NPE, Grand Saga and LKSA

Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) will be implemented at 10 toll plazas on January 13. The toll plazas are located on the Maju Expressway (MEX), New Pantai Expressway (NPE), Cheras-Kajang Highway (Grand Saga) and the Kemuning Shah Alam Expressway (LKSA). Only PLUSMiles cards, Touch ‘n Go cards and SmartTags will be accepted by ETC.

The specific toll plazas are:

  • Salak Selatan (MEX)
  • Putrajaya (MEX)
  • Seri Kembangan (MEX)
  • PJS2 (NPE)
  • PJS5 (NPE)
  • Pantai Dalam (NPE)
  • Batu 9 (Grand Saga)
  • Batu 11 (Grand Saga)
  • Sri Muda (LKSA)
  • Alam Impian (LKSA)

This is part of the Association of Malaysian Highway Concessionaires plan to have all 21 toll plazas in the Klang Valley going cashless by the end of 2016. According to association president Datuk Zainudin A. Kadir, electronic toll lanes are able to process 1,000 transactions per hour, compared to 360 per hour at manual toll booths, helping to ease congestion at toll plazas.

It would be a good thing for Klang Valley highway users to top-up their Touch ‘n Go cards today, and check the battery in their SmartTags. Enabling the Touch ‘n Go facility in the MyKad would also be a good idea, as a back-up.

No doubt there’ll be some cash-using idiots who’ll make a nuisance of themselves at these highways

Going cashless cannot solve traffic jams coz many highways from nearly 5-8 lanes to only two lanes, some Smartag n TnG lanes actually worst jam vs cash lanes eg at Damansara to Nkve toll plazas…Cash lanes actually reduces jams by holding some vehicles frum joining the road after the toll

I still believe that they should keep ONE cash lane open at every toll plazas. This is for out-of-towners who rarely ventures to tolled roads as well as for emergencies when somehow someone lost his TnG card or unable to top-up. Yes that lane could be jammed but it is available when needed.

They should also make sure all toll plazas have SmartTag lanes. While it is not many, there are still toll plazas without SmartTag lane. Seremban northbound is an example.

there is a GST impact of going cashless. Touch n Go reloads are subject to GST, while if you pay for the toll charges via cash, that payment is exempt from GST.

    More $$$ for the government.

You can find certain TnG reload stations which waived the service fee. Hence, no chargeable GST incurred.

Actually, we are already paying road taxes. Whats more, new taxes in the form of toll collections is making life more complicated. One of the reasons why we have traffic jams at toll areas is because of no nearby alternative route into the highway. Like the highway in Germany, there is rarely a traffic jam and there is many accessible entrance and exits in to the highway, reducing congestion. This country has just too many cost that people have to pay.

For tolls in Italy and Austria, their payment system is simple. You can reload your card during 24 hours period via machine, or pay using credit card at the toll booth or pay cash. The toll system should adopt payment of credit and debit card system
