DS E-Tense electric concept set to stun with 402 hp

PSA Peugeot Citroën’s new offshoot luxury brand DS Automobiles has unveiled its show car for the 2016 Geneva Motor Show that kicks off tomorrow. Dubbed the DS E-Tense, the concept is billed as a zero-emissions high-performance electric GT car defined by state-of-the-art technology as well as refinement.

It’s certainly a stunning design, with complex surfaces, a cab-forward design and a bright metallic green hue. At the front sits the new DS Wings grille design, but with an enlarged hexagonal centre opening that is reminiscent of the Audi R8. Flanking it are active LED headlight modules, while the LED daytime running lights that run to the bottom of the car are designed like beaded stitches, said to be inspired by high fashion.

A chrome spine runs along the centre of the car from front to back – the latter is where you’ll find that a rear windscreen is missing, substituted by a rear-view camera. The high mounted rear indicators, set in the C-pillars, are inspired by the original Citroën DS.

Meanwhile, the slim full-LED tail lights feature a scale-like design that will find its way onto future DS models. A large rear diffuser fills out the rear end, while 20-inch wheels shod in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres (245/35ZR20 at the front, 305/30ZR20 at the rear) complete the look.

The interior is dominated by diamond shapes, plus an upgraded watch strap design for the seats. Cold steel is used on the dashboard for a more futuristic look, while the steering wheel has a marked tulip shape. Also fitted is a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, as well as a 10-inch touchscreen.

Items designed in collaboration with French luxury brands include a Moynat leather helmet harness, a BRM watch that can either be worn on the wrist or affixed to the dash, and a nine-speaker, 640 W Focal Utopia sound system.

Powering the E-Tense is an electric motor producing 402 hp and 516 Nm of torque, propelling the car from 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds before hitting a top speed of 250 km/h. Combined range is rated at 310 km, while urban use will see the E-Tense travel 360 km on a single charge.

Under the skin, the two-seater monocoque chassis is made from carbon fibre and fitted with independent double wishbone suspension all around. The lithium-ion batteries are also mounted beneath the floor of the car to lower the centre of gravity, while a flat floor works in conjunction with the aforementioned rear diffuser to improve aerodynamic performance.
