Touch ‘n Go has given a stern warning to those looking to hack its cards to reload them illegally and use them to pay toll and public transport fares or to make purchases, according to The Star.

“Touch ‘n Go systems are being constantly upgraded and those attempting to cheat will get caught,” said CEO Syahrunizam Samsudin. He added that the recent incident – involving two people who reportedly managed to hack and reload a dozen cards, using them at tolls and on various over-the-counter purchases for two months – was an isolated case.

“We wish to highlight that there is no risk of this incident affecting other card users,” he said. “We give this assurance based on our investments made in terms of card technology, processes and fraud detection mechanisms.”

Syahrunizam added that there are bound to be irresponsible people in all stored-value card and payment systems, who will attempt to abuse, manipulate or tamper with the technology in order to cheat or commit fraud. He also advised the public to only purchase cards from authorised dealers and sellers.

Earlier, the police have said that those who are caught reloading their Touch ‘n Go cards illegally can be prosecuted under Section 4 of the Computer Crimes Act.
