Jaguar Land Rover introduces Android Wear app

With wearable smartwatches being more commonplace, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has introduced a new remote functions app for the Android Wear watch. The new app made its debut at the 2016 London Wearable Technology Show and will be available from the summer of this year.

The new Android Wear app provides JLR customers with access to several connected features, including the ability to turn on the car’s air-conditioning system by remotely starting the engine, so things are cool on the inside before setting off.

Furthermore, customers will also be able to check the vehicle’s status, including its fuel level, location and remotely lock or unlock the doors. The best part is, all of these functions can be accessed on your wrist. Apple Watch and iOS users already have access to these features with the InControl Remote Premium service.

The Android Wear watch app will be available on all future Jaguar and Land Rover models as well as on previous models fitted with the InControl Remote or InControl Protect infotainment systems.

Not bad. The amount of connectivity we can have with our cars does make life easier, especially the new E Class’ remote parking (reach a mall, get out of the car, walk away, and car goes to find parking by itself, and parks itself). But does make one wonder what will happen if the data transmission between phone/wearable to car is hacked by someone else, then they gain control of our cars. Pretty scary stuff. I wouldn’t allow such remote access to cars, unless the manufacturers can proof that they are hack proof, or has some bulletproof data encryption.
