A total of 1,535 cloned cars brought into Malaysia from Singapore have been seized by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to date. According to the New Straits Times, JPJ director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad said that the seized vehicles were unregistered and often had fake road tax stickers, leaving buyers unable to renew their road taxes once they had expired.

Syndicate members have been detained with the help of our elite squad and they are under investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission,” Ismail said. He added that, largely, Malaysians living in Johor had fallen victim to these syndicates.

Speaking to reporters at the JPJ’s 70th anniversary celebrations in Seberang Jaya, the director-general also said that Phase Three of the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) will be introduced in due time. The system will be enforced to monitor vehicles entering Sabah and Sarawak from Indonesia. Eventually, the JPJ chief said that the authorities will also adopt the system at the Malaysia-Brunei border.

Ismail reiterated that Phase One of the VEP system will begin in Johor, and that Phase Two will be at the Thailand-Malaysia crossing. Phase Three in Sabah and Sarawak will only commence once Phase Two is successfully implemented.
