As impressive as NextEV’s Nio EP9 is, the Chinese electric vehicle company won’t focus exclusively on high-performance vehicles. A report by Automotive News says the company is developing other all-electric vehicles like SUVs, MPVs and even a sedan to compete against established brands like Audi, BMW, Tesla and Toyota.

According to NextEV co-founder Jack Cheng, the SUV, which is due late next year, will have a 70 kWh battery pack for a range of 531 km, and will offer a performance “as good as or better than the Tesla (Model X) but cheaper.”

“It’ll be positioned at Audi and BMW but with a Toyota price,” Cheng stated. The SUV will be built in China as part of a partnership with Chinese automaker JAC Motors. Other vehicles in NextEV’s pipeline include the ES8 sedan, which is expected to make its debut at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show in April, followed by the BMW X3-rivalling ES6 SUV in 2018 and an ES9.

The vehicles should adopt some of the technologies of the record-setting EP9, which recently clocked the fastest electric vehicle lap at the Nurburgring. With four electric motors providing a total of 1,000 kW (1,341 hp), the EP9 will hit 100 km/h from a standstill in just 2.7 seconds, and on to a top speed of 313 km/h.

The battery packs themselves provide up to 427 km of range, and just like on your Tamiya, they are interchangeable via side-loading units. If you don’t have any spare battery packs lying around, charging the 777 V system will take 45 minutes. The price of this level of performance – about US$1 million (around RM4.4 million) or more.
