Chinese-owned German carmaker Borgward, which has been slated for a Malaysian arrival has been spotted by our reader Muhammad Najib. Seen here are the BX5 (here in white) and BX7 (black) SUVs on the back of a trailer along the PLUS highway. It was reported earlier this month that the brand will be launching two new models at the Malaysia Autoshow, which will be kicking off this weekend.
The launch at the event will also herald the duo’s arrival into the ASEAN market, where more than 100 distributors will receive their distributorship certificates, according to Malaysia Automotive Institute CEO Datuk Madani Sahari. Local partner Go Exim has plans for local, CKD assembly, and Borgward was reported in April to be considering the recently created automotive hub in Bagan Datoh, Perak as a potential site.
The BX7 is a seven-seater, mid-size SUV which was first unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, and aims to infuse rigourous German engineering, advanced technology, reliability, a distinct sporty wide body in a 4.7 metre-long form, powered by A 224 hp/300 Nm 2.0 litre turbocharged engine with a six-speed automatic transmission.
As the naming convention implies, the BX5 is a more compact five-seater, which first surfaced a year after the BX7 in Geneva. This model is 4.5 m long, powered by a 1.8 litre turbocharged mill with 190 hp and 280 Nm of torque, driving a six-speed auto gearbox and all-wheel drive.
The BX5 will feature “equipment based largely on mass-production technology,” the company said. The Malaysian debuts for the BX5 and BX7 are just around the corner; do stay tuned as we learn more.

No surprise for a China made product
Chinese owned German car maker. Lotus not still not a China product, Volvo still Swedish. Just be cleared.
This SUV will take some wind out of Proton Boyue’s sail.
It’s a German brand. The BX5 most likely a bit cheaper than VW Tiguan, but that is still much higher than Boyue’s predicted RM100k price.
hey it is made in China with China Quality.
only thing it is a retro German brand .of the past.
Foton Motors (based in Changing, Beijing) ain’t so dumb after all. Using a German brand name really does give the mis-perception of “Made in Germany”. Kudos to the Marketing Department. Best €5 Million ever spend.
This SUV will bungkus those Japs non premium SUV like CRV , x Trail ,CX 5 too.
It will be coming here as CBU initially so price wise it will not be so competitive until they setup local production first which I think should be quite a while more since they haven’t even secured a site to build their own factory.
Wow…. Nice SUV
if those figures are to be believed
Wait a damn minute, according to bashers it should be launched in tomyamland or tempeland, oh wait…
This is a very very good SUV and I believe the price will be reasonable as well.
If the BX5 is priced similar to the Haval H2 I think Haval can close shop already and the Proton Boyue will be in tough waters.
I don’t think so, it’s more powerful and technology could be a lot more advanced than The H2, not to mention the whole “German engineering” thing as well. I believe this might be priced similar to the CR-V but cheaper than say….VW Tiguan.
if bx5 price rm80k-90k, i would buy it…so pls dont price it wrongly GoExim
BX5 and BX7. Even the name mimics BMW.
Have to admit, the BX7 is look really nice.
This will instant kill your Boyue.
Manufactured by Foton Motors, subsidiary of BAIC (Beijing Auto). Foton started out as a lorry manufacturer & is China largest commercial vehicles manufacturer. The Borgward name was bought for €5 Million in 2014.
BX5 & BX7 not selling well in China (first 9 months of 2017, only sold total 30,000 units of BX5 and BX7) & rumoured Foton is looking to sell Borgward as it’s overstretched financially. As a comparison, Geely Boyue sold 286,900 units in 2017.
What a beauty, hopefully it will be priced competitively. The Chinese are coming.
like macan..
price well it might sell..
As mentioned by our PM, Proton is too large to fail. So the Govt will continue to protect Proton & Geely through price protection. Don’t expect any SUV to be priced lower than Boyue and the sx11 for the respective class.
BX? now i feel i don’t want proton to use PX
the Benelli of car world…
why does it looks like haval…twin brother??
